  • Down goes Nelson

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Sep 14, 2016

If you have the pleasure to visit Nelson Reservoir lately, you've probably notice the area looks drastically different. Nelson Reservoir's water is typically drawn down in mid-August each year to an elevation of 2215.0 acre-feet each year, According to Jack Conner of the Bureau of Reclamation. This year, however, dikes C and DA are being modified to incorporate a new filter zone and drainage collection at the downstream faces of the dikes and portions of the existing conduits are being replaced...

  • Former HLRC Director of Nursing Speaks Out

    A.J. Etherington, PCN Correspondent|Sep 14, 2016

In a recent press release, Billings-based Health Management Services (HMS) announced that they would be reducing Malta’s Hi-Line Retirement Center (HLRC) from a nursing home to an assisted living center in coming months. HMS also manages Glasgow’s Valley View Home, which has also seen its fair share of recent budgeting woes, staffing concerns and questionable management under their watch. The change in status in Malta will almost certainly involve a reduction in current residents at the facility. In fact, the exodus to other regional fac...

  • Scratch that itch

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Sep 14, 2016

Hunting season opened last week and it didn’t take long for me to get my fix even though I had forgotten what it was. I told myself it was simply the act of hunting, following the dogs, the weight of a shotgun in my hands, walking the prairie at first light, anticipating a shot. I had looked forward to all that for months. I didn’t need to shoot a limit, haven’t needed to do so for some time. I just needed to be out there. Or so I thought. What I actually needed was all that and one thing more:...

  • Seeking a complete audit of the retirement center

    Sep 14, 2016

Dear Editor, We need a complete audit of the Hi-Line Retirement to clear up a lot of questions going around the county. Here is my question: Expenses: 160 hours per month per employee at $18.75 per hours equals $3,000 per month multiplied by 12 months equals $36,000 per year times 50 employees equals $1,800,000. Income: 50 patients at $7,000 per months equals $4,200,000 per year. I’ve heard rumors that the rent-a-nurse cost $2,000 per shift. Two shifts would be $4,000 per day multiplied by 365 days comes to $1,460,000 per year. That is a...

  • Mixed emotions after HLRC announcement

    Sep 14, 2016

Dear Editor, The past several days have been filled with mixed emotions, a roller coaster of a ride. Separations, anticipation, adjustments, new faces, new surroundings, all jumbled together. Since Karl Rude met with the residents of The Hi-Line Retirement Center of Malta on August 24, and informed us of future plans for closing the nursing home and become recertified as only an assisted living facility, it has been a whirlwind of activity for my family. I chose to move as soon as possible. The result is that I am now in a very nice room at...

  • 0-1 fans, carry on

    Pierre Bibbs|Sep 14, 2016

I’ve never understood bandwagon fans. Is the more appropriate title sore loser? Since I started paying attention to pro football as a kid and a Chicagoan, I have been a Bears fan. Growing up a Chicagoan, I was lucky enough to see Michael Jordan and the Bulls dominate the league. I have been a White Sox fan since the early 90’s as well. I say pick a team and stick with them. That would be too easy. Instead we live in a society where people just quit. I know in the grand scheme of things it...

Was she pretty?-Well, stranger, your knowledge Of these parts is shore incomplete, When you ask such a comical question 'Bout the daughter of Yellowstone Pete. Why, man! • Letting Your Kids Learn To Be More Independent

    American Counseling Association|Sep 14, 2016

At this time of the year, many parents find themselves stressed as they watch their children become more independent. Summer’s over and that son or daughter is heading off to college for the first time. Or maybe a teen is now entering high school, or a younger child is involved in a sport with older kids, but suddenly you see your role as that all-important parent becoming much smaller. While we all want to protect our kids, we also have to recognize that a normal part of the development process is for the child to grow separate from the p...
