On Sunday afternoon, nearly 200 people gathered outside the Antique Modes of Transportation Museum and Parking Lot on Highway 2 in Malta to catch a glimpse of Phillips County's newest museum. The Dodson Town Council held a special meeting on Thursday evening to discuss a proposed rate increase of $3 per month to the 60 customers of the town’s sewer system – $270.25 per month to school – to help pay for a portion of a $73,000 repairs to the municipal sewer system. Bob Church of Great West Engineering was at the meeting to shed some light on the problems that the sewer system is currently having. At the first Malta Public School Board meeting of the 2014-15 school year, enrollment numbers were discussed, upcoming events were publicized and snow removal bids were read and accepted. High School Principal Scott King said enrollment is down a bit compared to the same time last year –152 – but is at two more than it was last spring. I timed myself this past Friday. It takes me exactly four minutes to get from my back porch to the 50-yard line of the Mustangs football field. Malta High School welcomes Ms Brenda Reynolds, one of its three new science teachers. Brenda comes to us from Kalispell, MT, where she worked on a large ranch and also taught high school science. She reports that she was raised in southern California and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology from Humboldt College in Redwood, California. The students and staff of Malta Elementary School are asking the public to once again help save special coupons, which benefit the school’s activities and programs. For several years, the school has been collecting Box Tops for Education coupons found on such products as Cheerios cereal, Betty Crocker mixes, and many other General Mills products. The Poplar Indians football team came to town on Tuesday for the home opener for the Malta Mustangs Freshman and Sophomore squad. The two teams slugged it out to a 6-6 stalemate in regulation, sending the game into overtime.
