  • Remembering the 'Reminder'

    Dale Bruckner|Sep 20, 2017

Many of you remember my grandfather Phil Long. While your memories of him may vary according to popular opinion, one thing that I have both heard about and experienced was that he could yarn a good story. I have heard comments from folks that say stuff like, "Whether you could believe it or not it sure was a good story." He could always get a crowd to respond well whether or not they liked him or not. Just a gift I suppose, but, at any rate, quite successful at getting the job done. Many of you...

  • Blow away, Mr. Meteorology

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Sep 20, 2017

I spent way too much time last week watching coverage of hurricane Irma on the Weather Channel. Eventually I found myself rooting for the storm. I’m not heartless. I felt compassion for the folks in Irma’s path. I got fed up with the weathermen. In order to show viewers how fierce the wind was, the Weather Channel’s meteorologists would stand, unsupported, in the worst of the gales. Bent over and fighting to maintain balance, they’d relate, breathlessly, what they were experiencing. Maybe i...

  • One year later

    Duane Murray, HLRC Administrator|Sep 20, 2017

WOW! It’s hard to believe that a year has passed since the passing of the torch at Hi-Line Retirement Center. Looking back over the past year I have so much to be thankful for. Walking through the doors on October 3, 2016, I had no idea if the facility was going to survive. I did know that I was in way over my head. I had not worked in a nursing home for over 20 years, and the rules and regulations have changed dramatically since then. My nursing home administrator license had been expired for 20 years. I did know that the community needs H...

  • All opinions matter

    Sep 20, 2017

Dear Editor, I read in your newspaper this week (9-13-17), that someone is upset by your publishing of letters to the editor that are slightly critical of President Trump, and believe that you are committing 'slander" and "libel" by doing so. Perhaps these "patriots" should actually sit down and read the Constitution including the FIRST AMENDMENT. I applaud your stance that both sides can and should be heard from, I can ascertain that your columnist Parker Heinlein is "pro-Trump,” yet I do not claim that he should be silenced just because I d...

  • From failure to features

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Sep 20, 2017

I had the honor to discuss a column I wrote a few weeks ago with some students at a local high school. It was a privilege and an honor to field the many questions that were thrown my way. One of those questions was about how I became a writer. The question triggered a response I am not sure many saw coming. I am an uneducated writer, meaning I did not go to school to become a writer or journalist. My disdain for writing started in grade school and didn’t really leave until I started working f...

Sympathy to family of Robert Smith of Malta. Fires are close to home, a load of hay on a truck and trailer burned up about a mile north of Malta! We (I) witnessed it all, as we were right behind the truck load of hay. The truck belonged to a trucking company out of Dodson. A “shout out” to the fire departments, Sheriff, volunteers, etc. who helped put fires out. The price of hay is high this dry year. But no one was hurt, that is what is important. Last week, I went to two funerals, Ereaux and...

Last week of summer, and what a summer we had! But now with the cooler temps and even a bit of rain, the heat seems to be in the past, for now. A couple of great horned owls stopped in our yard today! They can eat the mice with my blessings but please leave my little birds alone! The flickers, robins, and finches are still hanging around too. It makes for some fun movements! Trace and Beau Simonson had a wonderful cheering section at the football game for homecoming, grandma and grandpa...

  • Montana and the NFL

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Sep 20, 2017

When conversations arose with Helena, Mont., author Brian D'Ambrosio about the research he was doing on his latest book, Montana and the NFL, the typical response was "it's going to be a small book. I'm sure." Montana and the NFL, however, is anything but a short read and clocks in at just under 300 pages and is filled with player bios, stats and photos. This book could easily be completely read in a few sittings or over a longer period of time a few players at a time and would be a great thing to have on the coffee table while entertaining fri...
