  • Bringing the Funk

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Sep 28, 2016

It's not every day the people of Phillips County get a chance to hear live Funk, Soul, R&B or Salsa music...it might only come once in a lifetime. Well, that day is nearly upon us. John Roberts and Y Pan Blanco will be performing at Malta High School on Monday, October 3 starting at 7 p.m. Roberts – a former Malta resident and MHS graduate (1992) – will be joined by his brother Tony Roberts at the performance for a night of "melding high energy, danceable Funk, African and Salsa grooves...

    Paul Dragu, Havre Daily News|Sep 28, 2016

After 22 years as a state district judge in a three-county district, Judge John C. McKeon will hang up his robe in November. "I've tried to do my job studiously, hardworking and timely and confidently throughout this entire tenure," he said. For McKeon, the decision to retire as the district judge in Blaine, Phillips and Valley counties wasn't necessarily an easy one, but "it was just time." McKeon grew up in Malta, went to school at Gonzaga University and University of Montana, now lives in...

  • I think of it often

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Sep 28, 2016

Sept. 15 and it wasn’t unusual to have already experienced a snowstorm or two by then. A storm dumped two feet of snow on the mountains Sept. 9 when I was working for an outfitter in Cooke City in 1970. I’d never seen such a thing. One day it was summer and the next it wasn’t even close. Half of the horses ran off during the night. When it came time to take the hunters into camp on the 14th we had to borrow stock to fill out the string. I ended up riding a black mule. The critter had no...

  • Senator Steve Daines Monthly Column

    Sen. Steve Daines, U.S. Senator for Montana|Sep 28, 2016

It’s that time of year again when the nights and mornings get a little cooler the leaves start changing color and the elk are bugling. Soon, it will be time to break out the snow shovel and winter coat. The changing season also means that across Montana our students and teachers are back in the classroom. As a father of four and a product of Montana’s public schools from kindergarten at Longfellow Elementary School in Bozeman through college at Montana State University, I look forward to this time of year and the new beginnings and...

  • Congratulations to new HLRC Board members

    Sep 28, 2016

Dear Editor, Congratulations to the HiLine Retirement Center Board for replacing resigning current board members and choosing dynamic new members. Hopefully, the "new look committee" as referred to by Rick Mikkelson - resigning board president - will also be transparent. So important - the public has the right to know the HLRC's month to month financial activity - not to again to be called upon when a financial crisis appears for a bail out. Also the board meetings will be open to he public - as the center excepts Federal funds for operation....

  • I'm building a forge

    Sep 28, 2016

A couple of weeks ago my wife Susan and I decided to go out of town. We thought maybe we would go to Billings. Then we changed our destination to Great Falls. About the time we got to Dodson, we decided that a drive to Great Falls would be too long and we changed it to a trip to Havre. It was a good trip. By some miracle our son decided to take a nap rather than make the loud and obnoxious noises that two year olds do when they are bored. We shopped around for a couple of hours and then we were about to head home, when I thought we should...
