    Mark Hebert, Editor|Sep 30, 2015

One of a half dozen topics discussed at the Tuesday night Malta City Council meeting was the possibility of hiring a person to be a compliance officer for Malta. Malta Mayor Shyla Jones and the City Council have been discussing the idea for the past severals month and Mayor Jones said she recently talked with Phillips County Justice of the Peace Gayle Stahl and reported that Judge Stahl thinks the idea worthy of pressuring. “She says we need to get some accountability out there and right now we have none,” Mayor Jones added. The Compliance Off...

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Sep 30, 2015

On Thursday morning, it will be legal to drive faster on most parts of Montana Interstates, but in Phillips County, the speed limit is unchanged. “The speed limit changes only affect interstates,” said Matt Ladensburg, Maintenance Chief at Havre’s Montana Department of Transportation (MDT). “I-15, I-90 and I-94 are the only interstates in Montana.” In May, a bill was signed into law that allows speed limit changes from 75 miles per hour (mph) to 80 mph, according to MDT, and the law will become effective on October 1, 2015. MDT also stresses...

  • RIP Betsy

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Sep 30, 2015

Losing a dog always hurts, especially when it’s your first dog. Rosie was my first. An Irish setter cross, she was big and black, terrified of thunder, and addicted to garbage. She died when I was in junior high. Dad told me she’d been hit by a car. It wasn’t until years later that he told me the truth. She had been kicked to death by our next-door neighbor Mr. Ruschmeier, who caught her doing her business in his yard. My folks feared that had I known the truth at the time I would have sough...

  • The American Dream is alive and well

    Brandon Nicholson|Sep 30, 2015

Many of you may know my friend Della Shipp, she is a 2015 graduate from Glasgow. Please keep her family and father Wayne in your thoughts and prayers. Wayne was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this January, and passed away September 26. He was an avid fan of MMA, and that makes all sorts of sense, because Della is a livewire. She would be the first to agree with me on that. His favorite quote after being diagnosed was “Rock On”, which inspires me because of his can-do outlook on life. He taught an attitude of hard work, respect, and kicking bu...

  • When superstition becomes reality

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Sep 30, 2015

I’m a pretty superstitious guy when it comes to sports. I couldn’t tell you why I re-fuse to get off of the couch until halftime during Bears games or why I have to have seltzer with lime as my beverage of choice. I do know that since I have strayed from certain rituals the Bears have been terrible. That couldn’t be my fault, could it? There are a matter of reasons why the Bears have been playing horrible, but I have to say after the defense stood tall to the NFC champion Seahawks last Sun-day (...

Dear Editor, David and I are delighted that so many Malta folks have commented on his sunflowers growing along Central Avenue. We would like to thank the secret flower judge who took the time to tie the ribbon to his flower. A big thank you to whoever...

The Blacktail Ranch homestead was established by Gus Rittel in the early 1890’s on the South Fork of the Dearborn River north of Wolf Creek, Mont. Before becoming the Blacktail Ranch it was known as the Rittel Brothers Ranch, run by the four sons of Gus Rittel. They were living out the Montanan way of life raising cattle, sheep, horses, chickens and other animals needed to maintain a working ranc...
