Emery Myrick is a self-proclaimed "last man standing" as he was the lone resident at the Hi-Line Retirement Center. Hurricane Ian came ashore last week at a familiar spot: Cayo Costa, a barrier island on the Gulf coast of Florida. Barb and I used to trailer a boat from Montana to Florida every spring. In the early hours of Friday, September 23, 2022, Malta lost a treasure. Pearl Helen Leese Peacher passed away in her home at 90 years young. She was born on July 19, 1932, in Hebron, ND, to Joseph and Ruth (Barz) Leese. She and her three siblings Violet, Joe, and Ann lived in a small house. During her youth, she was in and out of foster homes and was in a segregated school where boys were on one side and girls on the other. She also worked as a waitress to help her family. The weather has certainly changed and is staying quite chilly. We are not seeing the sun as much as before and it is not nearly as warm as it has been when it is out. Almost wish for the hot again. Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus was detected in wild birds and domestic poultry in Montana earlier this year. While HPAI cases in wild birds did appear to decline over the summer, there are detections of new cases in parts of the U.S., including Montana this fall. We drove to Big Timber on the morning of Saturday, October 1, at 5 a.m.! It literally rained the entire drive there, and the entire drive home. I can’t complain because everyone needs it. I’m glad I checked the weather forecast and warned the girls to bring extra clothes because within 10 minutes of being at the course, we were all soaked from head to toe.
