  • PC Livestock Fundraiser this Saturday at Pavilion

    Katie Brown, PCN Correspondent|Oct 9, 2019

In 2016, Phillips County voted in the Bison Ordinance with a 79% voter approval rating. In that Ordinance, it requires ALL bison to be tested and certified disease free, and requires all bison to be branded, tagged, tattooed or otherwise identified to track health status. In that same year American Prairie Reserve requested a variance from that Ordinance. Reason for the request was because they stated it was an unnecessary hardship on them to have to abide by such ordinance. I must be clear...

  • Phillips County Celebrates 10 Years of Smokefree Indoor Air

Submitted by Sonia Young, PC Coalition of Healthy Choices|Oct 9, 2019

Phillips County – In 2005, the Montana legislature passed the Clean Indoor Air Act (CIAA), one of the most important public health policies in state history. The law was fully implemented on October 1, 2009. The U.S. Surgeon General concluded in 2006 that there is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke and stated that the only way to protect public health is to eliminate exposure. Tobacco smoke carries at least 250 chemicals that are known to be toxic or carcinogenic, causing lung cancer, heart disease, stroke, and other fatal ailme...

  • Loring Neww for October 9, 2019

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|Oct 9, 2019

Happy October, all my autumn people! Let's hope that we have a month of wonderful fall weather before winter visits again! I've had two raucous blue jays in the yard the last couple of days! Very pretty blue and loud voices! This morning about thirty robins flew in to partake of the bird bath before they start on the long trip back south! What a great weekend I had! My nephew, Ross Cowan drove up from Denver with his dog. They stopped in Billings to visit David and Brandie Stordahl and pick up...

  • One last cast for the year

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors columnist|Oct 9, 2019

I thought I was done with fishing for the year. My focus had been on hunting since Sept. 1 when upland bird season opened. But early last week, after a morning chasing sharptails with my friend Dallas, and a forecast high of 75 for the afternoon, one final fishing trip sounded like a great idea. We changed out of our hunting clothes, gathered up the fishing tackle, and loaded the kayaks in the back of the truck. It was a 45-minute drive to the bass pond and we watched the wind pick up along the...

  • Phillips County Museum News for October 9, 2019

    Lori Taylor, PCN Correspondent|Oct 9, 2019

The PC Museum archives constantly cough up unusual books and paper items. My find this week was a book on the military and trading posts/forts in Montana. The trading posts in Montana helped to open our area to exploration. Bakers Post sprouted up in 1868 and was located on the south bank of the Milk River. It was of short duration, however, only lasting about one year. It received its name for I.G. Baker a trading entrepreneur. Fort Browning was also located in Phillips County. It was erected by the Northwest Fur Company and may have been name...

I have also been watching the construction crew put the new gray metal roof on the MOI building and looks to almost be done as of last Wednesday. Sympathy to victims of the September snowstorm in Montana, especially Browning, Mont. and other areas. Our Whitewater had rain, a skiff of snow, horrible wind and cold weather. My cellar flooded (foot of water) caused by a leak in the pipes from the storm! Farmers and Ranchers sent plumbers, Trey Shores and Wesley Campbell, who repaired the damage. Thanks to them for prompt service and good work here in Whitewater. Some farmers in our area and around the county have not finished combining and...
