  • Heartstrings hit the right notes

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Oct 10, 2018

Malta native Kristen (Engebretson) Estelle made her triumphant return to her hometown last Monday night as she and her band, the Heartstrings, played a concert at the Malta High School Gymnasium as this year's opening act of the North Eastern Arts Network Concert Series. A nearly packed house greeted Estelle and the Heartstrings and though many people in attendance talked of the pride of seeing Estelle, MHS Class of 2006, back in town, maybe no one was as proud as the gentleman who introduced...

  • Dodson HS Homecoming

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Oct 10, 2018

An action-packed Friday was had at Dodson School last week as the school hosted several events to put an exclamation point on this year's Homecoming week. Bright and early on Friday morning, Dodson Close-Up students set up shop in the school's cafeteria where they started the day by serving coffee and maple bars before moving on to barbequed hamburgers and hotdogs as the day progressed. The group is working toward earning funds for their trip to Washington, D.C. While some mingled around the...

  • Getting around town and beyond

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Oct 10, 2018

With the first snow of the year covering the city streets last Wednesday, Bill Pryor guides his bus through Malta and his first rider of the day, Mae Holt, sits happily in her seat, safely buckled in, on her way to school at Malta Elementary. "Riding the bus is awesome," Mae squeals. Mae is in the second grade and is picked up for school each morning at the Hi-Line Retirement Center where her mother, Janice Holt, is a nurse. Janice echoes her daughter's thoughts on the Phillips Transit Authority...

  • Visions for Montana's economy clash in fight over Initiative 186

Marti Liechty, Community News Service University of Montana School of Journalism|Oct 10, 2018

Editor's Note: Students at the University of Montana’s School of Journalism are once again providing coverage of Montana election contests for the state’s news organizations. The student’s election work is being supervised by professors Lee Banville and Dennis Swibold. Professor Courtney Cowgill will direct our legislative coverage. All three are veteran political reporters. The controversy over ballot Initiative 186 seems to be about two competing visions for Montana’s future economy, and water quality underlies them both. The ballot...

  • Montana's Greatest Wonder:

Rick and Susie Graetz, University of Montana Department of Geography|Oct 10, 2018

Almost immediately upon departing the Three Forks area, the newly formed Missouri is neatly tucked into a mini-gorge. Then, only 16 miles from its inception, the Toston Reservoir and Dam decelerate its flow. After traversing the "Little Gates of the Mountains," so noted on Clark's map of July 25, 1805, as "2d range of mts - little gate," near the small village of Toston, the river will soon ply the last of the big southwest valleys. Officially established when the post office opened in 1882 and...

  • Montana Viewpoint

Rep. Casey Knudsen, Mont. HD 33|Oct 10, 2018

Ballot initiative 185, or I-185, has become quite the hot-button issue this campaign season. I-185 raises the taxes levied on all tobacco products, including raising the cigarette tax to $3.70 per pack, and raising the moist snuff tax to the greater of 83% of the wholesale price or $3.70 per 1.2 ounces. Now, right off the bat, I am not a fan of this initiative for the simple fact that it raises taxes. That fact, however, is far from the only reason I am voting NO on I-185. If a person only reads the language for the ballot initiative, it seems...

  • Where's the compassion?

    Oct 10, 2018

Dear Editor, The United States of America has become a nation of gross negligence and an empty way of thinking. It is also lacking respect, and compassion for all its citizens. It seems that its love for one another has waxed cold. Harry Carpenter, Jr., Malta Editor's Note: The PCN also received anonymous Letter to the Editor last week. The PCN does not print anonymous letters, but if the person would like to have thier opinion in the paper, they are encouraged to call in a name and location....

  • Loring News for October 10, 2018

    Oct 10, 2018

10.3. Jack Frost hit with a vengeance this week. He is a little late with the first frost, but did it up good when he hit! Now I just have to clean out my tomato plants and sunflowers to get ready for winter, which will be here shortly! I spent a few days in Billings this week with my grandkids. Those turn-about's are wicked! When I got home from Billings I noticed that one more old building was not standing in Loring! It was not taken down on purpose, but a rolling truck can do some damage! I see that some of the cattle are in their winter...

  • Phillips County Museum News for October 10, 2018

    Lori Taylor, P.C. Museum Curator|Oct 10, 2018

UFO’s fact or fiction. In 1950 two spinning disks were seen by Great Falls locals. In the 1960’s missile sites across Montana were suddenly deactivated as UFO’s were seen overhead. And in Phillips County the year 1967 brought many UFO sightings in south Phillips County. In January rural residents tell stories of being awakened by their dog and looking out the window to see a large object with glowing red lights along the bottom that could cover a 3-4 miles stretch in less than a minute. In February of 1967 in south Phillips County a husba...

  • The most politicized bird

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors columnist|Oct 10, 2018

Well, there’s always next year. Maybe. Sage grouse season has come and gone and I saw nary a bird. It certainly wasn’t for a lack of trying. I hunted upland birds 23 days last month, much of the time in areas where I had seen sage grouse in the past. I hunted in Phillips, McCone and Garfield counties. I even hunted along barbed wire fences bedecked with those white metal tabs on the top strand indicating there are sage grouse in the area. While I didn’t specifically target sage grouse...

  • Rough takeoff

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Oct 10, 2018

I like coffee. No, I love coffee! I enjoy it very strong, black, and fresh. Every. Single. Morning. But not this morning because I'm sick. And it hasn't been very fun. I have my Keurig set to warm up at around 5:30 a.m. so that all I have to do is rinse the pod holder and put a new pod in. After that, I press the button and out comes liquid energy. I have grown fond of the Keurig because it is so easy to clean and the amount of caffeine seems to be less than when I brew coffee in my French...
