  • Do tell, Mr. Downing

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Oct 11, 2017

Can you say carpetbagger? Troy Downing, a part-time resident of the toney Yellowstone Club at Big Sky, wants to represent Montana in the U.S. Senate. The head of a California-based self-storage company told the Associated Press he wants “to be part of the solution preserving the Last Best Place.” Apparently, however, that solution involves little regard for the state’s fish and game laws. The 50-year-old storage unit mogul faces charges that he tried to buy resident hunting and fishing licen...

  • Open up my heart

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Oct 11, 2017

Welp, your faithful newspaper publisher is headed to the disabled list. After over a year of walking around clutching my chest — à la L.A. junkman Fred Sanford spouting “this is the big one” — doctors in Billings, Mont., will finally crack my chest open and clean out a valve in my heart making me a member of the “Zipper Club” (that is, someone who has had open heart surgery.) The technical term for what ails me is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, but I just tell people “my ticker is on the fritz.” For the past 18 or so months — but much worse the...

  • My fastball is horrendous

    Oct 11, 2017

I don’t claim to be a rocket scientist. But every once in a while, you gotta use what the good Lord gives you. As many know by now on Monday, October 2, our county and Hill County got blasted by a snowstorm. In the opening hours of that snowstorm we lost satellite reception. We had never lost a signal prior to that day. I wanted to complain more than I had ever complained about anything. Then I immediately thought of how bad other people in our country and other countries are having it. Due to the storm, Havre was still without power on our r...

  • Don't take friends for granted

    Oct 11, 2017

Dear Editor, Suicide has to be one of the saddest words in the English language. It’s a word you are never ready to hear. Dr. Scott Hahn, a professor at Stevensville University, spoke on an episode in his life. He was en route to a speaking engagement when he decided to stop at a nearby house, at the home of friends, Dave, who he hadn’t visited with for some time. Dave’s mother invited him in while gesturing up the stairs. She mentioned that Dave was in his room and would be delighted to see him. Dave’s parents were divorced. Indeed, Dave wa...

Doris Tollefson, Pastor Saco Lutheran Church|Oct 11, 2017

On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther hammered 95 statements on the door of the Wittenberg Church. This Middle Ages monk saw a need for change in the church, and with the help of technology, he was able to spark discussion on reforming the church. As with any change, it was met with resistance from the established church, but was embraced by many people of Martin Luther’s day. The effects of that change are still with us today, 500 years later. To commemorate this world-changing event, Saco Lutheran Church is hosting a movie night on October 11 a...
