    Oct 19, 2022

Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen today asked a federal board to overturn the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) decision to grant a permit change allowing bison grazing in Phillips County. The permit is a part of the American Prairie Reserve’s broader effort to expand bison grazing on the plains across northern and eastern Montana. Attorney General Knudsen’s appeal asks the U.S. Department of the Interior Office of Hearings and Appeals to overturn the decision and issue a stay until the appeal is resolved to prevent irreparable harm to the...

  • Phillips County Museum News for Wednesday, October 19, 2022

    Krista Fahlgren, P. C. Museum Staff|Oct 19, 2022

They say that things happen in threes, and in 1966, residents of Phillips County took that to the extreme. Now, in my lifetime, I remember three or four instances of a car driving into a building. But within 10 days in April of 1966, there were three cases of cars careening into local establishments. On Sunday, a car lurched into the front of the post office, on Tuesday, a car from Great Falls “moved into” the front of the J.C. Penney store, and the following Tuesday a carload of young men from Washington state lost control on icy roads and...

  • In a Mulligan, I Would Be A Social Influencer...

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Oct 19, 2022

If I had it to do all over again I’d become a social influencer. It’s a calling that seems to fit me. I have little talent. I don’t sing, dance, act, or play a musical instrument. My athletic skills are paltry. I’ve been told on numerous occasions that I can’t write a lick, either. I envision a world, however, where my opinion matters, where what I’m wearing matters, where what I’m eating matters. People would follow my lead. They’d wear ill-fitting clothes, hang out with dogs, and drink beer....

  • I Haven't Crawled Like That Since 1990

    Pierre Bibbs, Play Ball|Oct 19, 2022

Welp. I crawled into my crawl space. I have only been in my crawl space a few times over the last ten years, and hated it every time. This time. It was necessary. I needed a new dryer vent. In an attempt to save my father-in-law’s shoulder a lot of grief, I went below my house to try and install the new dryer vent hose. Unfortunately, I failed. This was due to my lack of understanding. For one, the hose was a little too short, and secondly, I needed a “crimping tool”. So, instead of savin...

  • 50 Years of the Clean Water Act: More Must be Done for Montana's Rivers, Streams, and Lakes

Derf Johnson, Montana Newspaper Association Submission|Oct 19, 2022

The Clean Water Act turns 50 on October 18th. Over the past five decades, it has proven itself as one of the most successful environmental laws on the books. It has cleaned up contaminated waterways, helped to assure that the drinking water coming out of your tap is safe for your kids, and protected the ecological integrity of rivers and streams. Indeed, without the Clean Water Act, Montana would not be the state it is today. But far more must be done in order for us to reach the promise of the Clean Water Act – which is to prevent, reduce, and...

  • Four Penguins Head to State C

    Carly Hammond, For the PCN|Oct 19, 2022

On Friday, October 14th, we attended the Harlem Invitational. It was a nice crisp morning with a little bit of a breeze, just the kind we like! After a hard week of practice, the girls were ready for their final regular season meet. This one really lets me know if they are ready for the state meet. We've been working on consistency the last three weeks and I was anxious that they would do well. The Harlem course is a very flat course to run, so we adjusted our splits accordingly. This is a...
