  • To Mr. Sargent and Class

    Oct 23, 2019

Dear Editor, The Malta Dirt Daubers recently spent many, many hours creating fall decorations for our oak barrels. Perhaps you have noticed our hay bale Minions, pumpkin people, pumpkin floral arrangements and scare crows located throughout down town. Some of these items were very bulky, heavy, and difficult for us to move. Many thanks to Mr. Pat Sargent and the students in his weight class who generously helped us out. Mr. Sargent organized his students to place our decorations in over 50 barrels. Their actions are greatly appreciated as we...

  • Report your car vs. dear, or else

    Oct 23, 2019

Der Editor, Last Friday my grandson and his girlfriend had made plans to drive up to Loring to see gramma Dixie. Lo and behold about two miles north of Malta, a deer jumped out of the ditch and wreaked havoc on their car. Brentton called his dad who went down to pick them up and push the vehicle off the highway. They borrowed a flatbed trailer on Saturday morning and ate lunch with gramma before they headed down to get the car. The highway patrol called my son and asked him to have the kids stop to visit. They were given a ticket for not...

  • Pheasant hunting time

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors columnist|Oct 23, 2019

I always have mixed feelings about the opening of pheasant season. On one hand I look forward to hunting the big, gaudy birds again, and having the house full of friends and dogs. On the other hand, now I’ll have to share the places I hunt with strangers. Since the Sept. 1 upland game bird opener I’ve been hunting more days than not. I saw other hunters twice, and I almost always hunt public land. I‘m spoiled, used to having much of Montana to myself. Few hunters, it appears, are inter...

  • Keep your hands off the stop signs

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Oct 23, 2019

Last week I read in the Phillips County Sheriff’s report that “a male reported witnessing a female take out a stop sign in a residential area; Deputy responded to the call; case file started” and it left my jaw dropped. Our Malta Mayor, John Demarais mentioned that “someone will probably take them down like they used to” at the Malta City Council Meeting where it was decided to add stops signs all the way up 5th Avenue East after someone who travels that road posted his concerns with safety and a lack of signage on 5th Avenue on social me...

1-16. Beware of scams! I recently received a questionnaire — which resembled a U.S. Census form — requesting donations to reelect President Trump. I did not reply of course, and it was lucky I did not reply. The document was supposed to be from the U.S. Congress but was a copy made by scammers. I know this is true because I heard on a Montana TV station that this scam is going around through the mail. The TV announcer also mentioned that if you get these letters, you may contact the County Comm...

Montana could regain a second congressional seat as a result of the 2020 census. The 2020 census in Montana will begin in February 2020. The census not only determines congressional representation, it also...
