It was six weeks ago that Mrs. Anna LaBrie started to gather different plays together before deciding which one was worthy enough to be performed for the citizens of Malta and surrounding areas as an audience. One week later, LaBrie decided on Urban Legends and had held play auditions to see which student suited the part of each character. On Monday, October 23 and Tuesday, October 24, the play was unveiled. Urban Legends is a play based on a group of horror tales that some may relate to...

  • Things are cooking at Saco's Pip's Diner

    James Walling, Glasgow Courier|Nov 1, 2017

We all know eastern Montana is a food wasteland. It's about the only thing I hear people complain about consistently from Havre to Poplar. The watering holes are few and far between. And they usually aren't very good. Amazingly, Heidi Pippin and her cast of family and friends have stepped in to get the job done in Saco. If you read nothing further, hear me now: Pip's Diner is great place to eat. The latest incarnation in a line of local eateries (next door to Old Brand Saloon), Pip's is a...

  • Thoughts from Helen D.

    Nov 1, 2017

Dear Editor, This episode was told to my husband and me by a young Montana instructor: A high school boy had stated that he intended to kill himself. The next day he was found dead! It bothered me for sometime as to why the teacher didn’t ask the student into his office to converse or, better yet, invite him to share a delicious home-cooked meal at the teacher’s home that evening. After a period of time, I considered the family the teacher was raised in — there was the answer, loud and clear! It was never known that family members “hopp...

  • Remembering a fall in the mountains

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Nov 1, 2017

The death of an Illinois man caught my attention last week. Chase Shott, 26, died in a fall near Mystic Lake in the Beartooth Mountains. It was one of those “There, but for the grace of God goes me,” moments. I took a fall there years ago. It was early October 1973 and I was working for Hiland Guide Service in Cooke City as a cook and wrangler. My friend Bill Butler was guiding a hunter who’d drawn a sheep tag, and the three of us backpacked in to a spike camp at the far end of Mystic Lake....

  • Box Elder Bug-out

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Nov 1, 2017

Every once in a while I run out of things to write about. When that happens, divine intervention can come through at times. This time intervention came from a flick of the finger, as I cleanly removed a Box Elder Bug from the outside of my water cup. These Box Elder bugs have been pretty annoying. I admit they aren’t as terrible as cockroaches or some of the other bugs I have experienced but man are they creepy. When you see swarms of them outside, it’s gross but when you can’t even get away...

  • P.C. Museum news for November 1, 2017

    Lori Taylor, PC Museum Curator|Nov 1, 2017

Phillips County is very lucky to have a Theatre still operating in Malta. One hundred years ago a dedicated man by the name of R.M. Trafton worked to bring theatre to our town. I enjoyed this article that was in the newspaper and thought others might enjoy it. “A crowd which in a metropolitan city would have brought out the Standing Room Only sign was the condition that greeted the McPhee-Downie Co on the opening night of Trafton’s new Theatre. From pit to dome every seat was occupied, the attendance probably being double of that of any previou...

    Sarah Osmundson, PCN Reporter|Nov 1, 2017

The Pearls for Precious Angels fundraiser held at the Mint Bar was a joyful event. The fundraiser was to raise enough money to supply both Glasgow and Havre Hospitals with a Cuddle Cot. A Cuddle Cot is a cooling system that preserves stillborn babies (and older children) while their parents grieve. On Saturday, October 21 there were several pearl seekers, three chances to win on boards and delicious hors d’oeuvres to sample. A fine tuned system was in place with Mary Waters taking money and orders from participants. Each paid $30 for a c...
