  • Phillips County Museum News for November 4, 2020

Stories abound at the Phillips County Museum. The following is a true story. In 1907 Fred Heeck decided to go to Montana to stake a land claim. Journeying by train he arrived in Dodson Montana and rented a room in a small hotel. Knowing that information was always available at a local saloon Fred quickly found what looked to be a busy establishment. While having a drink of whiskey Fred met a man named Phil Doucette. In the next few days, Phil helped Fred stake a land claim and introduced him to his parents, who were farmers. The Doucette...

  • Ballot measure on restricting local gun laws

    Nov 4, 2020

Dear Editor, This has come up time and time again that this would take away their right to restrict gun sales to undesirables, If you can call them that. All of the points mentioned in the front page article by Alex Miller in last week's paper, are fundamentally wrong. I have listed the things, in the federal government law, that prohibits these people from owning firearms. Montana law cannot supersede or undermine it. The Gun Control Act (GCA), codified at 18 U.S.C. § 922(g), makes it unlawful for certain categories of persons to ship,...

  • Sorry if you disagree...but not really

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Nov 4, 2020

I have heard the grumblings about the PCN office being closed to the public (for the most part) and about the “No Mask, No Entry” signs I have posted on the front door. I am sorry if you are upset. I am not sorry for the decision. A popular opinion around town and on social media is “don’t live in fear.” I am not afraid of Covid-19, but I am afraid of people who don’t take it seriously. It doesn’t matter if you believe the conspiracy theories about this deadly disease. Equating COVID-19 to “people die in car accidents, so we should we stop...

  • It was just last month

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Nov 4, 2020

It seems only yesterday I was diving off the dock to cool off in the lake. It was just last month. Now I’m digging through my drawers looking for long underwear, regretting not putting the snowblower on the tractor, and trying to find the water hoses under the snow. Winter arrived abruptly last week. It wasn’t the usual fall equinox storm. That one usually hits in September and gives us a preview of what’s to come. This year, however, September was warm and dry from beginning to end. Octob...

Daylight savings time ended on Sunday November 1st so hope everyone remembered to set their clocks back one hour . Confusing sometimes. The weather has remained strange with a combination of cold (very cold) nights but some sunshine in the afternoons to melt all of our snow off for now. Maybe we can have enough warmer weather yet to finish some of the fall chores. Some trees have not shed their leaves yet. They too were caught unawares. Between the colder weather and the Covid 19 things have...

This was the third weekend that the check station has been open, as the station began collecting data Oct. 10-11, for the opening weekend of pheasant and general antelope. “Hunter numbers were down slightly this weekend, likely due to the cold and snowy weather, and because of the youth deer hunt being a week earlier,” said Havre-area biologist Scott Hemme...
