Over the past five years, Smith has taken thousands of Halloween portraits and printed them off, gratis, for those who pose. Over the past seven weeks, the store has gotten an entire refurbishment and was completed just in time for the Christmas Scrip kick-off in Phillips County. Wilke is happy with the results. • Remembering Coach Cliff Hysell

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Nov 5, 2014

Every time I see a sideline reporter interviewing a football coach at the end of the first half I think of Cliff Hysell. Cliff was a difficult interview when the game was over. I can’t imagine trying to talk to him at halftime. If he had anything to say it might have been memorable, but it certainly wouldn’t have been suitable for print. Hysell, 72, died earlier this week of a heart attack. He was one of the last of a vanishing breed, an old-school coach who brooked no nonsense. I covered Mon...

  • No Shave November? Count me in

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Nov 5, 2014

Last week on Friday morning, I shaved most of the whiskers from my face. I had a decent winter beard going after not shaving for about a month, but when Halloween rolled around, I went down to bare skin as I wanted to be as historically correct as possible with my costume. I had hoped to be Mark Twain for the day and to really set my costume off I ordered a wig, some droopy eyebrows and a wild, walrus mustache. Well, after I shaved, I attached the mustache and eyebrows, plopped the wig atop my dome and took a peak into the mirror. Yikes! Mark...

  • Loring News for week of November 5, 2014

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|Nov 5, 2014

Even though the weather has turned cooler, I still have a couple of pansies blooming! Now that the leaves are gone off the cottonwood I can see three nests of the bullocks oriole! I never noticed any before last year when I saw one! The town of Loring looked like it was lit up for Christmas on Saturday night! There were several cattle trucks with their lights on lining the street! Many calves are going down the road this week! It is the primary shipping week of the year, I believe! The mommas...

  • Yesterday's Phillips County News Memories for week of November 5, 2014

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Nov 5, 2014

1 years ago November 6, 1914 Headline: A good yield Victor Swenson, southeast of Malta, brought to this office this week a sample of Marquis wheat raised on his farm this season. Mr. Swenson is loud in his praises of this brand of wheat and states that the yield per acre was 20 ½ bushels from a sowing of one-half bushels to the acre and a bushel of this wheat weighed 62 pounds. Additional Locals: Malta weathered the storm of Halloween very favorably and the youngsters did little or no damage, and it is safe to say they feel just as goo...

  • The Challenge

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Nov 5, 2014

I don’t know if it’s because I was born two months earlier than I should have been... When it comes to eating... I can put it down. My mom and dad used to think I had an iron gut... That brings me to my continuation story from last week. While living in California, I took the Knucklehead challenge upon hearing that there was a Knucklehead Hot Dog Diner in Roseville. This behemoth meal consisted of multiple hot dogs (a eight pack maybe??), buns and corn chips, smothered in french fries, che...

  • Mustangs Football: Malta outlasts Roundup 20-17

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Nov 5, 2014

The Malta Mustangs won their first playoff game since missing the playoffs last year. Though many doubted the Mustangs would make it this far, Malta has silenced the doubters defeating Roundup for the second time this year, winning a 20-17 thriller, that featured a stingy Malta defense, who didn't give up many big plays and for the most part were disciplined against the counter plays Roundup does so well. "It all started with our coaching staff, they taught us how to read the play," senior runni...
