  • Loring News for November 11, 2020

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|Nov 11, 2020

Loring had an awesome week of above normal temps in the 70’s on a few days! Then we were warned that a big snow storm was coming in on Saturday and most of us were busy getting the last minute things done up before the cold weather hit! The snow started about 6 on Sunday morning. I'm not sure how many inches but in some places I've got a foot and a half drifts and in others its just a couple of inches. That's the way we roll here in North Phillips County! It'll be gone by Wednesday and a new s...

  • Work to unite for the mental health of our county

    Nov 11, 2020

Dear editor, To the People of Phillips County: Sometimes we need to work to unite for the mental health of our county and country and following this election is one of those times. We propose that everyone take the time to enjoy, sing, or share a rendition of the old time favorite hymn: “My Country, “Tis of Thee.” This is our unofficial national anthem and it is exactly what we need right now. A decrease in controversy. It includes God and it doesn’t include proper body stances. It’s not too difficult and it’s not too easy. WE need peace and a...

  • Checking them off the list

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Nov 11, 2020

Every angler is looking for an edge, a technique or perhaps a secret lure sold on late-night television that fish simply can’t resist. I’m still looking, but apparently I’ll have to check drones and remote-controlled boats off my list. Montana wildlife officials are considering rules that would prohibit fishing with both. Not that drones or RC boats are sure-fire fish catchers. They’re just annoying. Both sound like a swarm of angry bees. However, they do provide anglers with new ways to deliver...

We are looking at a new look of winter again and it, is not a good one. It turned very cold again on Saturday night and started snowing in the night, snowed all day Sunday and was foggy with the wind blowing again. They predicted an accumulation of up to nine inches and I'm sure it has already reached that. Spring cannot come soon enough. Steve Cole was up to see parents Wink and Terri Cole this week. Sharon Goodrich of Hogeland stopped to see Polly Solberg on Wednesday. Joel and Wesley Olson...

  • Building a herd and hope

    Laura C. Nelson, Ranchers Stewardship Alliance|Nov 11, 2020

The old homestead still stands sentinel on the hill. Weathered, worn and abandoned long ago, Heather Martin has often looked at the relic and wondered just how the brother-sister duo who claimed this parcel more than a century ago thought they could make a living off such a small sliver of sandy soil. "There's no well, no running water, and when this reservoir dries up, there's nothing," the Phillips County rancher says, nodding to the still pool nestled in the natural basin. "Maybe they got...

  • Downtown Holiday events in full swing

    Krista Fahlgren, PCN Editor|Nov 11, 2020

The weather was beautiful on October 27th as the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Malta Merchant's Committee, and our three area banks kicked off the giving season with the 3rd annual Oktoberfest and Christmas Scrip Kick-off. While attendance seemed to be down slightly from previous years, and good time and some screamin' deals were had by all. Julie Snellman, President of the Merchant's Committee, noted that the dreaded curse of 2020 may have had something to do with it. "I personally feel the 18...
