  • Lost art alive and well at MOI

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Nov 25, 2015

The loom in the back room at Malta Opportunities Inc. is crammed full of shuttles, threads and sweeping wooden mechanics, which zig back and forth as Bobby Cole, a client at MOI, weaves fabric in and out of the huge machine before pulling the handle to tie loose fabric down. "I like to make the blankets," Cole says, keeping his eyes on the work in front of him. "Sometimes I can make six or seven a year and I will make six this year." The loom (a Webber Delight Loom, manufactured by the Newcomb...

  • Crasco croons at Jerry's

    Kari Hould, PCN Correspondent|Nov 25, 2015

The sayings are everywhere... "you know you're a redneck if...," "you know you're from Montana if...", and of course there is "you know you're from a small town if...". Proof is always in the pudding and walking off the streets in Malta you see "small town" everywhere. Be it from the friendly gestures and waves, from the courtesy extended to others or the down-home touch, these make one glad they live in a "small town". A good example of this occurred on Central Avenue when local rancher and...

  • OK with not reaching tab, bag limit

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Nov 25, 2015

A bird hunter from Arizona was caught earlier this fall in Malta with 65 sharptail grouse in his freezer. He was fined and lost his hunting rights for two years. Normally I would be glad to hear of such a bust, glad that a scofflaw got his comeuppance, but this was different. I’d met the guy a couple of times and liked him. Al had been coming to Malta for more than 20 years. He stayed in a camper down by the river, ran English pointers, and had little interest in hunting anything other than shar...

  • Add another star to June's crown

    Nov 25, 2015

Dear Editor, Thanks and Hats off to June Cornell - manager of the Malta Food Bank. Last Wednesday the bus picked up a senior member of our community at her home and she was only wearing a light sweater - it was a very cold and windy day. Asking her where her jacket or coat was she said she had left it in Great Falls. Having spent a few years volunteering at the food bank and knowing June always made sure people's needs were met - if she knew of them. I gave June an early morning call on Thursday - she stated she had a jacket that she thought...

  • Time to start seeing perfection in every woman

    Brandon Nicholson, Columnist|Nov 25, 2015

Is there too much pressure on young women to attain the perfect body? It’s an issue that has always been present, but is much more apparent today. I will be the first to admit, when a girl with a beautiful body walks by I notice. I would guess I’m not the only one, I would even go as far as to guarantee it. What affect do television, celebrities and marketing campaigns have on young women? I couldn’t tell you. Thankfully, I know plenty of women that can. Here is some of the conclusions I’ve come across when asking friends these same questio...

  • Just one more plate…

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Nov 25, 2015

I’m encouraged by the amount of athletes that enjoy lifting weights. It’s apparent that Malta has had plenty of success in sports thanks in part to a hard work ethic in the gym. Since my high school years I have also become infatuated with becoming stronger through weight training. I’ve never turned to alcohol or drugs during the “low” times in my life. I’ve always found prayer and the iron to be more therapeutic. There’s nothing like kicking off your week with 300 pounds on the back of your...

  • Phillips County Museum News for November 25, 2015

    Lori Taylor, PC Museum Curator|Nov 25, 2015

Happy Thanksgiving. Looking back in the PC News 1948 edition this ad caught my attention (my how things have changed) I’m wondering how many people can relate to pin feathers and cleaning the inside of a turkey. Here’s what the ad said “Getting a turkey ready to roast used to be more trouble than getting Junior ready for school. Not these turkeys. These turkeys are really clean. Hardly a pin feather to pick. No singeing to do. No cleaning left to do inside – the turkey is completely ready for stuffing.” As I pop my Thanksgiving turkey in...

  • Dodson News for November 25, 2015

    Nov 25, 2015

We experienced one of the worst windstorms on record this week. It was breaking records all over the state with some of its gusts and in some places they had snow and blowing snow along with it. Thankfully, we missed the snow and ice. This is the season—check the reports when travel is necessary and drive carefully. Steve and Bill Henry visited their mother briefly on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the cooks at the school served a delicious Thanksgiving dinner to a large contingent of the community. There was a happy joining of students and guests a...

  • Whitewater News for November 25, 2015

    Nov 25, 2015

A get-well wish to Janet Brown (my sister) who was in St. Vincent’s Hospital in Billings, Mont. Janet is home now recuperating. There were basketball games with Turner here in Whitewater. Lunch was served also. Horses are whinnying at the stockyards. I wonder who they belong to? The weather is beautiful; sunny and warm, but the nights are cool since it is November. There was a supper and Turkey Bingo at school. There were many prizes and turkeys given away! Happy Thanksgiving! Don’t eat too much. Helen...

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Nov 25, 2015

1 years ago November 28, 1915 Mark Twain on advertising When Mark Twain was editing the Virginia City Enterprise, a superstitious subscriber once wrote and said he had found a spider in his paper and asked whether it meant good or bad luck. Mark replied and said it meant neither good luck or bad luck. The spider was merely looking over the pages to find out what merchant was not advertising, so that it could spin its web across his door, and lead a free and undisturbed existence forever...

  • Green lights around town honor troops

    Kari Hould, PCN Correspondent|Nov 25, 2015

Just in case you are wondering about the green lights that are showing up around town in the evening, there is a message behind them. For the month of November the porch lights (or the “welcome home, I love you” lights as some call them) are in honor of the military troops who are serving this nation on all points of the world. The green lights was designated as the color to be used as a message for all to see that we keep the lights burning until our troops all come home. While the world is in the state it is, one’s faith and active parti...

  • Book review: Lucky Shot

    Sarah Osmundson, Reporter|Nov 25, 2015

Talk about a lucky shot! How fortunate Phillips County is to have a Harlequin Books author right here. Barbara Heinlein, aka B.J. Daniels is one of the most friendly people and no wonder this book is dedicated to her close friend, I’ve recently seen them interact and they are bubbly. There are bubbles brewing with the Montana Hamiltons family in the recently released book “Lucky Shot”. Senator Buckmaster Hamilton is running for President of the United States. Buck is not the first Montana rancher in his family who has ran for a political offic...
