  • Thanksgiving Wildland Fires

    Mark Hebert, Publisher|Nov 29, 2017

Thanksgiving of 2017 will be one that the folks of this county likely won't forget. At about 1 p.m., pages went out to local volunteer firefighters that a fire was burning north of Malta. A few minutes later, more pages went out reporting four fires south of town. The fire north of Malta was quickly extinguished, but the main fire southeast of town (near Content Road and Black Coulee Road) would burn for at least the next six hours, scorching a swath of land estimated at 10-miles long and, at...

  • Special Session update from Sen. Mike Lang

Sen. Mike Lang, Mont. District 17|Nov 29, 2017

Montana, and especially I, say thank you to the Montana 2017 special session House and Senate leadership for helping the legislature provide our state with $230 million to replenish the fire fund and provide dollars to shore up the budget problems. Like many situations, there are differences of opinions, but someone must make the final and best decision at the time. I feel the legislators for the 2017 special session did that. In times of trouble, we all must partake. The largest users of the tax dollars, DPHHS, education, and corrections, had...

  • Thank you to the lovers and haters alike

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Nov 29, 2017

info During my father’s final years, when asked “How are you doing?” he would respond “Well, I’m still here.” I’m beginning to feel that way about this column. I’m still here. And I’m very thankful for that. It’s going on 12 years now that I left Bozeman and I’ve written a column every week since then. All but a handful have seen print. There are times when I wonder if anyone is reading. Months will pass and I’ll get little or no feedback. Then I’ll write about a topic that touches a nerve (gun...

  • We are Thankful

    Nov 29, 2017

We had a reason to be thankful this Thanksgiving. I have to admit I am not completely a fan of sonograms as far as checking in on developing babies, but we had one the day before Thanksgiving. I get that they like to make sure that the baby is developing, but poking the baby seems invasive. This time I was thankful, regardless of the $400 bill that will hit my bank account. For those that don’t know, we had a miscarriage earlier this year. So for our peace of mind, it was good to see that everything is developing right. This was also the f...

  • Loring News for November 29, 2017

    Nov 29, 2017

I am so thankful for the warm temperatures this November! I know colder weather will come, but glad for a few days reprieve. The wind has been making things miserable in its own way! I'm not really complaining, I've lived in Montana long enough to know that the weather will change just give it a few minutes! Many deer and antelope have been harvested this season. I saw a few really nice ones too! The whole Leroy and Gale Simonson family was home for Thanksgiving weekend! It must have been quite the gathering! Then most of Ree Simonson's family...

A former M-ette state Champion has been shining on the court for the University of Montana Western Bulldogs and in her junior season she has not only cracked the starting lineup, but has helped her team to a 6-1 start. Schye, the daughter of Tad and Amy Schye of Malta, has in fact started the first seven games of the season at the post position for the Bulldogs, having filled the spot vacated by graduated senior Molly Klinker, a former Fairfield Eagle. A strong form of autism has not stopped local Malta Middle School seventh grader Signee Salveson from hitting up the Malta Skate Park, in fact she has become an inspiration. "What I have noticed at first about the skatepark was there was a lot of controversy in building it," Sig Salveson said. Sig and his wife Aimee Salveson have both experienced firsthand, how the Malta Skate Park is a good thing for the community, and they have noticed something different about it after watching other local yo...
