  • Albertsons Grand Re-opening

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Dec 9, 2015

It was almost 56 years ago (nearly to the day) that then Buttery Foods moved into the current location in Malta where shoppers visit Albertsons for their grocery needs. The year was 1959 and the cost of bread was 20-cents per loaf and a T-Bone steak could be had for $1.09 per pound. The grocery store moved from its home of 20 years on Central Avenue to its new – and current – location in 1959 and held a grand opening the second week in December. The new building boasted 60x120 feet of floor spac...

  • Santa seeks assistance at HLRC

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Dec 9, 2015

Santa Clause will be making his tenth straight visit to the Hi-Line Retirement Center on December 24 as part of the Angel Tree program and is once again looking for assistance from all the good boys and girls in Phillips County for a helping hand. Each year at Christmas time, residents at the HLRC jot down a few items they wouldn't mind receiving this year on the backside of hand-designed ornaments – this year colored by Malta Headstart students – which are hung from the Christmas tree in the center's dayroom. Last year, there were 52 such orn...

  • I thought about letting the whitetail go, then didn't

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Dec 9, 2015

It didn’t look like I’d do much big game hunting this season. I failed to draw any of the tags I sought. No big deal. I’d just have that much more time to hunt birds. Then I got a surprise. I was one of 10 hunters who received permission to hunt deer on a large ranch south of town. My inner-Hemingway rejoiced. There was a time when I considered myself a pretty fair big game hunter. I could get on an elk track at first light and usually find its maker. I shot my share of bull elk, including a cou...

The Little White Church strolled through the streets with carols and got us all in the holiday spirit. Cattlewomen and the LDS church generously served snacks throughout the night. We sure are...

  • Phillips County Museum News for December 9, 2015

    Lori Taylor, PC Museum Curator|Dec 9, 2015

Who says “history is boring?” Every day at the PC Museum is exciting and different. Last week a genealogy request started the staff scrambling for answers about a man named “Tennessee Jones.” What we found was a love triangle shooting, whiskey running, and a man hiding out in Montana. In addition, there were several Phillips County residents that had tidbits about Tennessee Jones. He was definitely one of those unique Montana transplants. I hope you are a PC Historical Society member as the story will be in the next “Time Traveler" newslette...

  • Whitewater News for December 9, 2015

    Helen Austin, PCN Correspondent|Dec 9, 2015

Sympathy to the victims and families of the horrors in France and Syria. Also, sympathy to the families who lost people in the latest shooting massacres. Once more, we see a need for gun control everywhere. I visited with Warren Taylor who is against gun control and is for the right to bear arms. Basically, gun control is to require mental checks on gun buyers of assault weapons and also crack down on black market gun sales. If they are responsible, maybe some citizens would keep guns. To...

  • Counseling Corner for the week of December 9, 2015

    American Counseling Association|Dec 9, 2015

As parents, many of us have seen how recent terrorist acts can frighten our young children. Between the Internet, TV news, and the talk among friends, even fairly young children may worry that what has happened elsewhere might happen to them. While there's no rational explanation for the recent horrific acts, don't simply dismiss your child's questions or fears about such incidents. Most young children can't really understand what has transpired, but will often personalize it, imagining it as something that could easily happen to them. When...

    Marko Manoukian, P.C. Extension Agent|Dec 9, 2015

The St. Mary Rehabilitation Working Group continues moving forward with state legislative funding. The mission remains as it was in 2003 when the group started, to find a workable solution to rehabilitating an irrigation project before it sustains catastrophic failure. In recent activity, the Working Group lost its long standing basin co-chair, Randy Reed. Since the inception of the Working Group Reed had represented the basin members as co-chair. Reed recently lost his battle with cancer in...
