    Mark Hebert, Editor|Dec 10, 2014

The Phillips County Museum and Historical Society hosted their Christmas Social on Thursday night in Malta and over 200 people packed the museum to take part in live auctions, silent auctions, food and drinks and entertainment and holiday merriment. Hors D’oeuvres galore greeted the museum’s visitors on the night and tables and chairs covered every free inch of the building’s floor. Those who weren’t eating were either chatting with friends or voting on their favorite mini trees prior to the...

Santa will be visiting the Hi-Line Retirement Center on Thursday, December 18, and he has requested some assistance from the kind folks of Phillips County. Each year since 2006, Santa has been coming to the retirement center to bring Christmas cheer and a bag full of goodies for the center's residents and staff's children. Each year the center's residents jot down a few things they would like to receive for Christmas on the backside of paper ornaments that are designed by local children and placed upon the Christmas Tree that is a part of the...

For the past 20 years, the Christmas trees at Kirkwood Funeral Home in Malta have displayed ornaments honoring loved ones who have passed away. Currently, there are nearly 450 ornaments on display in the lobby of the funeral home, some on a Christmas tree, many more on giants white pegboards. "There is a lot of history hanging in this room," Greg Kirkwood said. "Every ornament has a story." • Turkey didn't complain, macaw might have

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Dec 10, 2014

I wonder what the bird said. A Great Falls man faces charges of animal abuse after allegedly attacking his pet macaw on Thanksgiving. According to a story in the Great Falls Tribune, David Boyken is charged with choking the bird and breaking its leg. Investigating officers found blood and feathers at the scene. Although Boyken's wife supposedly witnessed the incident, the story failed to mention who called police. My guess is the bird. I suspect the macaw had had his fill of this creep and called him out. Boyken, who cops say was "highly...

  • Shopping out of town not a real savings

    Dec 10, 2014

I overheard a comment by a Malta citizen the other day. In so many words, they were stating how they could go out of town and save money rather than shopping locally. I cannot deny that goods and services are a bit more expensive here than in the bigger towns of our state. But do you really think you are going to save money by driving out of town to do your shopping? Let’s do a little math and see what we come up with. Using Havre as an example because they have Walmart and North Forty (For-merly Shipton’s Big R). Just for simplicities sak...

It all started with the Black Friday insert a few weeks ago. Since that time, the regular design...

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Dec 10, 2014

If you have walked through the sliding doors at Albertsons in Malta lately, chances are you became a bit discombobulated with the changes to the store's front end. . e greeting cards no longer line the front wall, the shopping carts have found a new corral and new gondolas lead the way to the produce section. Aside from the new look of the store, visitors are also met at the door by the aroma of the freshly roasted chickens spinning in Albertsons' new rotisserie – the main reason for the s...

  • Memories for the Week of December 10, 2014

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Dec 10, 2014

1 years ago December 10, 2014 Headline: Phillips County This may be premature, but a fair understanding makes friends and keeps them. Now that county division is the issue, we should settle the question intelligently and with malice toward none. According to wealth and population, we have a legal right for a new county, conceded to all concerned. We are, so to speak, like a child becoming of age and respectfully ask Mother Valley and Papa Blaine for our share. But some object, saying it will increase our taxes. I think it is better to pay...
