Choosing winners in this year’s VFW Auxiliary Christmas Card Contest, in its fourth year, was no easy feat. “It took a long time this year,” said Carolyn Schmoeckel of the VFW Auxiliary. “We had a hard time because they were all so nice. It took six of us about five hours to pick the winners. They all have such great imaginations.” The children were asked to create Christmas cards that will be sent to veterans at the Fort Harrison VA in Helena. A total of 21 winners were announced last Thursday...

The Dodson School Christmas concert last Thursday featured 12 songs, lots of holiday cheer and a surprise visit by Jolly Old St. Nick. During the opening of the concert, Dodson Schools Superintendent Gary Weitz welcomed the crowd in the school’s gym and promised a great showcase. • Take note: I'm packing

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Dec 16, 2015

I think the notion that the government is going to take my guns is preposterous. But no more so than the notion that the government will protect me from someone else with a gun. I’ve been hearing that the feds might take my guns since I was small and didn’t have any. Ditto with gun control legislation to keep me safe. Neither ever happened and I expect neither ever will. I’ve stopped listening to all the nonsense and taken matters into my own hands . All you nut-job jihadists and homeg...

  • Everyone loves chicken, don't they? chickenMEWednesdays

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Dec 16, 2015

Ever since it started snowing, it has been hard to get out of bed. While beautiful, winter is the most depressing season in my opinion. Thank God for sports, otherwise I might be a shut-in. Go to work, go home. Re-peat. Luckily this County has several competitive teams in the winter season. I love hearing the optimism in players’ and coaches’ minds at the start of basket-ball and wrestling season. To see the hard work of our local athletes played out in games and meets is en-couraging to me....

  • Info sought on America's pastime in Minnesota

    Dec 16, 2015

November 22, 2015 a letter was sent to the Mayor of Loring at the Saskatchewan/Montana border, Montana, USA. Philip Lowry is seeking information on international baseball games between the USA and Canada. I referred the “Mayor” of Loring to the Phillips County Museum and thought the Phillips County News could also reach out to our readers for help. Dear Ms./Mr. Mayor, I am extremely excited by an idea that recently occurred to me. For ten years, I have worked on a manuscript. The subject is international baseball, games between teams from two...

  • Congratulations, Cheryl, sorry we couldn't be there

    Dec 16, 2015

Dear Editor, I’m sorry I am unable to attend the Grand Re-Opening of the Albertsons store this week but I wanted to publicly express our congratulations, thanks and appreciation to our hometown store manager Cheryl Voegel, her awesome crew and the Albertsons company as a whole. Several years ago, Cheryl quietly told me, “I’m really working to get Malta a new store, this community deserves it.” It hasn’t been about boosting her resume – it has been about empowering her team, looking beyond corporate confines and understanding the “big pictur...

  • Oh, the many things I am looking forward to

    Brandon Nicholson, Columnist|Dec 16, 2015

It’s been a pretty weird winter so far… there is no wind, there is hardly any snow, and there is no extreme cold. We all know the snow is coming, but I can’t believe we haven’t been dumped on yet. I must say that I am thankful for the weather otherwise travelling would be a nightmare. I spent the weekend in Three Forks watching the M-Ettes defeat Fairfield and Belt. There seems to be no ceiling on the potential of this basketball team. They are so deadly from every spot on the floor, despite playing with a sense of lethargy. I am super excited... Full story

  • Counseling Corner for the week of December 16, 2015

    American Counseling Association|Dec 16, 2015

The holiday season is a period when lots of us feel overwhelmed by all the stress, tension and pressure it can bring. While the holidays usually hold great joy for many people, for some of us this time of year can leave us feeling overcome by the expectations that the world, and we ourselves, put upon us. One way to reduce holiday stress is to recognize that the "ideal" holidays we are constantly bombarded with through advertising, TV shows, magazine stories, social media and more, simply aren't real. No matter how hard we try, it's pretty much...

They come from near and far. All searching for a tidbit just a glimpse of their past. Some find a happy ever after story others find murder and mayhem. Regardless of the end result, 90% of those who come through the museum door looking for information on their ancestors are successful. Often the staff is able to find the homestead records and a copy of the original paper, sometimes our research library provides pictures of ancestors, even old newspaper articles giving a glimpse of the activities of those that came before us. Our success rate...
