  • Recognizing those who work to support positive mental health in Phillips County; The past, present, and the future

    Janice Reichelt, PCN Correspondent|Dec 25, 2019

Our nation decries the lack of mental health services yet, often doesn't give credit to the persons contributing on a regular basis to the cause. This is a small tribute in honor of their service and dedication to mental health in Phillips County over the past years. Some are retired, some have passed way, others have relocated, and some continue to serve in other roles. We appreciate them all. The late Ned Mangis sponsored an educational piece in the Phillips County News - the "Counseling...

  • Come down to the HLRC and give back to the Greatest Generation

    Dec 25, 2019

Dear Editor, Our community has much to be thankful for, of which would be our senior citizens at our senior center, the Hi-Line Retirement Center (HLRC). We are what we are because of what our seniors worked so hard for all their lives. It is because of our senior citizens that our community has such strong values. So during their “winter years,” let’s not forget about them. Just a visit means so much to them, be it a few minutes or a couple of hours. I remember my husband’s grandparents loved it when we would drop by on our way to and from ev...

  • A good bird dog dies young

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Dec 25, 2019

I never put much stock in the old saying that a man is lucky to own one good bird dog in his life. If that’s the case then that man just didn’t have enough dogs. I’ve had a bunch, some better than others. And I’ve been very lucky. Baby Ruth wasn’t just good. She brought a joie de vivre to the hunt that only a young dog can. She died last week, young and fit, only two and a half years old. Something awful, growing rapidly inside her, cut her life short. The Monday before Thanksgiving we were h...

  • Glad to be home

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Dec 25, 2019

Ready or not, here it is. I thought it was ridiculous that we had tons of snow dropped on us during October. I thought to myself, yes this is terrible but not bad. We are a little over a week in December. Now I am starting to believe all of the warnings that I have been told about this year’s winter; it is going to be bad. A couple of weeks ago, on a Sunday, I found myself taking a road trip to Havre, testing the frozen water and taking my life into the mercy of the cold, snow, ice, my m...

  • Malta Armory update and other construction tidbits

    David Veseth, PCN Construction Reporter|Dec 25, 2019

The house across the street from the Phillips County Court House was having walls built in the new basement. The new walls they are putting up seem to be made from wood. Over at the MOI, we have been moving items from our temporary home out on Highway 2 back into the newly refurbished MOI building on 3rd Street. We have spent a lot of time organizing and the general consensus from the MOI clients is that the building is very nice. Next week, I will go and see how the work on the Snyder House...

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Dec 25, 2019

Taking a 19-0 run in the first quarter, the Mustangs ran away with a 60-31 victory over the Poplar Indians in their last game of 2019 in Malta, on Saturday, December 21. The team's opening run which ended with three minutes to go in the first quarter was a contrast to how the team started against the Harlem Wildcats one night prior, in which the team was outscored 17-9 in the first quarter and eventually lost 69-59. • Lady Mavs head to break with win

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Dec 25, 2019

Not much can be said about the North Country Lady Mavericks' 57-8 win over the Brockton Lady Warriors on Saturday, December 21, in Brockton. But one thing is for sure, the Mavericks did not overlook Brockton. "Our defensive pressure made it very difficult for them to get any good looks at the basket," Coach Amber Erickson said. " We had 21 steals and 23 offensive rebounds as a team. " The Mavericks were led by Kia Wasson who had 16 points, five assists, and four steals. Kaitlyn McColly had a 15...
