    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|Mar 20, 2024

Editors Note: The March 6 Loring News was inadvertently left out of the PCN. We are sorry for the inconvenience. March 6: One way to realize how fast time is marching on is when the month changes numbers! We are already on month three! Congrats to the North Country Mavericks and the Malta M-ette’s! Both are Champions in the divisional tournaments! Repping Phillips County! Good luck to both teams in the next tournament! I’ll be cheering and listening from Billings! I did something today that was...

Once again there are shootings and murders. This time in our own Billings, Mont. When are we going to stop these crimes? To the shooters, if you want to shoot and love guns so much, why don’t you join the Army? Back in Whitewater, our Whitewater Penguins/Lady Mavericks won the state title in basketball! WOW!! Sommer Green from Whitewater sang the National Anthem. She did a great job and has a beautiful voice. They interviewed her on the radio, and she sang the National Anthem on the radio! K...

  • I Just Had to Get Out of the Office

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Mar 13, 2024

While working at the Bozeman Chronicle some 20-odd years ago I was offered the chance to take part in an adventure race. Not knowing exactly what an adventure race entailed, I nonetheless jumped at the opportunity to get out of the office for a week. A multi-discipline, team affair, the race consisted of mountain biking, hiking, rafting, riding horses, and rappelling along a 200-mile course through the surrounding mountains. I was quite comfortable with everything except rappelling, about which...

  • Where Does Time Go?

    Kari Hould, Karis Quiet Corner|Mar 13, 2024

Wasn’t it great, after a long week of activities, tournaments, and events and exhausting one’s self out, to wake up one hour earlier! I can hear some sneers and groans as you read this. So many people lost that hour of opportunity to get their life in order…dern it! It slipped away! Wouldn’t it be nice to just decide where the clocks should be and please Mr. Benjamin Franklin, the bankers and golfers…and alleviate the need to reset clocks around the house, then read the manual to set the car clock, or just get used to adding one hour to the ti...

Congratulations to the North Country Lady Mavericks on their second state championship in Class C Basketball! What awesome athletes those girls are! The tourney was in Great Falls. The Class B tournament was in Billings. Many people from Phillips County were down to take in the games. Malta had really close games and the girls played well. Bring on the track season! Brandie Stordahl and Debbie Richau were lunch guests of Dixie Stordahl to celebrate Spring Forward Day! The weather has been really...

Phillips County has two teams who won divisionals and will be going to State! The Lady Mavericks won first to go to state in Great Falls and the Malta M-ettes won first to move on to state in Billings. Many from Whitewater, including Jeannie Green, went to the games in Great Falls. Best of luck to all the teams. Remember, be good sportsmanship. There was a dinner and a program at the Whitewater School to honor the players. Whitewater Lutheran Church has Lenten services on Wednesdays until...

A poem for our dear sister Ree. NORTHERN LIGHTS I stood alone in the darkness watching the northern lights dancing in the sky It was like the angels in the heaven Dancing for a passerby It seemed like they were dancing To music that I couldn't hear I felt the angels saying "Tonight's our chance to let you know we are near" I felt that they were dancing To a silent drummer only they could hear Dancing across the sky just for me I wonder, "Do angels ever shed a tear?" Just when you thought they were gone They would show up again for a lonely...

Again, sympathy to the family and friends of Ree Simonson, a lifelong resident of Whitewater. She recently moved to Malta. There was a wake rather than a funeral service at the Whitewater Lutheran Church and lunch followed. The next day, there was a large funeral service in Malta followed by dinner. Ree was my friend, and she will be missed by all. The Whitewater Penguins/Mavericks basketball teams went to tournament games. They were held in Glasgow. Many from the area attended the games. Good...

Kenzie LaBrie: "It went pretty good. The FFA set up the different color wars during the week. I helped out by serving at the breakfast." Kaden Green: "It was really quite fun; there were a few more older people (& FFA alumni) than in the past; there was more participation. I enjoyed visiting the 7th and 8th graders at the workshop for new members. I'm looking forward to the State FFA meeting in Billings." AJ Marquis: "Things ran smoothly and it was a great way to give back to the community. My...

  • The Endangered Species Act is Broken

    Feb 28, 2024

The Founding Fathers had many contentious debates over the powers of the United States versus the States. Their goal was to avoid any suggestion of creating sovereignty. Section 8 of the Constitution of the USA limited the roles and powers of the Federal Congress to International issues, declarations of war, interstate commerce, etc. In Amendment X the powers not specifically delegated to the United States are reserved to the States. The Founding Fathers tried to design a system where power was not concentrated in any aspect of the government....

  • Our Spring Break Will Be Different Than Normal

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Feb 28, 2024

It’s that time of year when Barb and I head south. By the end of February, we’ve had enough snow and cold. Warmer climes begin to call. For decades we pulled a boat to Florida, fishing the salt on both the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Most years we camped on barrier islands under the palms. Eventually, however, that trip became too long, Florida too crowded, and too many days on the road to get there. We began spending time in the California desert about five years ago. While it lacked the fis...

As I said last week, Rodney drove me up to Loring and the weather was fantastic. We saw two bald eagles and about 50 hawks, which happens at this time of year. We did not see any newborn calves, but I’m sure they will be coming soon! I had a wonderful time up North! Cindy Clark, Carol Lumsden and I made an international journey on Tuesday to Val Marie. I asked to get a stamp for my passport when we crossed into Canada. It’s my first use of the passport, and I’ve had it for 5 years! We ate lunch...

Sympathy and prayers to the family and friends of Ree Simonson. Ree was a lifelong resident of Whitewater. She raised her family here. Ree moved to Malta, then later to the assisted living home. She was my friend and a friend to all. Ree will be missed by all who knew her. It is soon going to be March! It is so hard to believe. Happy Birthday to all who are celebrating birthdays and anniversaries. This includes my grandsons Seth and Jon Siewing. They are both in college in Bozeman. A get-well...

  • My Shotgun Would've Kept Me From Facing My Fear

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Feb 21, 2024

I have a fear of falling. It’s not age-related. I just don’t like to fall. It often hurts. During hunting season I’m especially careful. The ground is uneven if not steep, the footing precarious. If I take a misstep and lose my balance I always protect the gun, letting my elbows and backside hit the ground instead of the fancy walnut stock. That approach has served me well. While my elbows and backside may be scarred and bruised, my 20-gauge, Italian over-and-under only bears a couple of hard-...

Congrats to the North Country Lady Mavericks and the M-ettes and Mustangs on their championships at their individual District tournaments! Also, congrats to the North Country Mavericks on their 3rd place finish and the right to go to divisional! I made the trip north on Sunday and we saw about 50 hawks on the power poles! It is a sign of spring! We also saw two bald eagles! Jeanie Green reported that she heard a meadowlark already! And I’m assuming that the geese are in at the Austin place. I...

Whit Ozark (9) stood tall on the podium in Butte at the wrestling tournament. He won a medallion for 2nd Place!! Trax and Gray Simanton were in Poplar at the last wrestling tournament. Trax got a win in his weight class 123- 5th Grade. Lacey, Rowdy, and Ridge Beil came to Pat Murdock’s to visit on Friday. Therese took the kids sledding up the big hills. It was a cold day too. Then Jett Anderson brought his boys for a visit as well that same afternoon. Ryett, Rodee, and Rip. Other visitors last week at the Murdock farm were Jimmy Murdock, Lexie...

Greetings from our Whitewater, Montana! We have ice and snow but above zero temps. Last week it was 40 below. Whitewater School Basketball teams are gearing up for tournaments next week. Good luck to all teams. Many in this area watched the Super Bowl on Sunday. Farmers and ranchers are busy feeding cattle and livestock. Hay is abundant which is a blessing. Compared to drought years. Some ranchers are planning on calving soon. Whitewater Lutheran Church is planning a Lenten Soup supper. Evening...

Rio Oxarart: "I was towel boy at the state wrestling; it was pretty cool watching Chaka Schipman win the state championship. It was pretty cool 'cuz he's a junior and most are seniors." Calvin Squires (also towel boy): "It was pretty cool being down on the mats and watching the older people wrestle and it was pretty cool watching Chaka win. He beat a really good kid that he knew he could beat, he just had to concentrate on the match ." Leslie Schipman (Chaka's mom): "It was awesome, we're very...

  • We Wanted IT! Let's Keep IT!

    Feb 14, 2024

Dear Proud Phillips County Citizens, We wanted IT, we needed IT, and we got IT! Now what??? Let’s keep IT! The “IT” I am referring to is the River’s Bend Assisted Living. We may not understand how we can help when we don’t have someone to move into River’s Bend now, so I thought I could share my opinion regarding that.... I love doing that! One action we can take is to support the amazing lunch meals provided by River’s Bend, Tony, Emily and awesome Chef Barb. The Congregate meals they prepare for Seniors are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday fr...

  • Birthdays Flush out Fond Memories

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Feb 14, 2024

Ace turned 13 today. There were times over the last six months I didn’t think he would make it. Not that there was anything specifically wrong with him, he’s just old -- for a hunting dog anyway. And he is that. Ace has been hunting since he was seven months. On Jan. 1 he completed his 12th season. Never the best dog in the pack, he blended in over the years hunting behind more aggressive, more talented dogs. Now it’s just him and Dot, a three-year-old who far surpasses him in the field. Hunti...

What a whirlwind the last couple weeks have been, a lot of happenings and a whole lotta goings on!! We are home to State Champion wrestlers, and sent a lot of strong athletes to Billings to make other kids crank up their level to beat ours. Season 23-24 for girls and boys basketball for regular conference play ended over the weekend and now the slates are clean as District Tournament actions begin (for Malta) on Wednesday in Wolf Point, and finish up on Saturday. Class C begins in Conrad. On occasion, one needs to reflect on general things...

Happy Valentines Day! Have you gotten over the total excitement of the Super Bowl? We even had a tail gate party here at Affinity! The football game was playing at the theater, so it was on a big screen! One of the refineries had a fire which really put a huge amount of smoke into the air. Since David, my son, works at a refinery I was worried. But he works at Exxon and the fire was at Phillips 66, I heard that everyone was ok over there too! Good luck to the North Country Mavericks, both girls...

Recent visitors to the Olsen Farm, for a five-generation photo were Great-great Grandmother Margie, Great-Grandpa Allie, Grandma Mandy(absent), her daughter Tatum and Tatum’s two children Katana and Kenzo Strong. Nancy Olsen from Florence, Mont., and her mom Margie were in Malta Friday at Rivers Bend to help celebrate Ree Simonson’s 92nd birthday and Joann Hammond's birthday. Other guests were Brenda Murdock and her neighbor Buckshot Nelson who lives on the Danny Simonson ranch. Let it be known that both Pat (84) Jones Anderson and her hus...

Sympathy to the family of Pat Berg Tribby. She is the sister of Howard Berg. He still has cattle in Whitewater. Pat was raised here, and her mom Gladys Berg cooked at the Whitewater schools for over 40 years. Lois Berg Breitman was her sister also. It is sad how many friends and family we have lost. It is February! The groundhog says there is going to be an early spring. This may be true as Easter is early this year-in March. Happy Birthday to all February birthdays. Our Whitewater weather is...

  • Reading News On The Phone? Ha.

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Feb 7, 2024

Some years ago while working for the Bozeman Chronicle I was told by a computer tech there that folks would soon be reading the news on their phones. I laughed at such a far-fetched notion, coming as it did from a computer nerd. What did he know about news? This was a few years before the demise of the daily newspaper. I couldn’t yet see the end. Now I’m lost without my phone, which provides me with up-to-the-minute news, sports, weather and nonsense. It also offers a constant distraction fro...
