  • No One Has Ever Taken Our Guns

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Jan 31, 2024

A friend recently said her husband was in the process of passing along his collection of firearms to their grandchildren. She said she hopes the guns don’t get taken away, but confiscation remains a fear. I suppose that’s because the threat of the government taking our guns is nearly as old as me. Despite the fact that no one has ever taken our guns in this country, confiscation of firearms remains a right-wing talking point. As a result we have a populace armed with military-style weapons rea...

  • Spring Is Around the Corner

    Kari Hould, Karis Quiet Corner|Jan 31, 2024

It doesn’t take much for some of us (who am I kidding, for MANY of us) to get excited about the pending signs of spring. It had to be my lucky day when a small miracle occurred. Mother Nature, with a grab rail on one side and a walking cane in the other, was aided by the spikey grabby little metal shoes clips attached to her feet managed to shake off the fact that there were only five (5) degrees brave enough to show up on the thermometer and wish us a nice day Wednesday. What really set the day up for being optimistic though, was the p...

  • Whitewater News & Opinion for Wednesday, January 31, 2024

    Helen Austin, PCN Correspondent|Jan 31, 2024

On New Year’s there were fireworks (or gunshots) to celebrate 2024. Now the children have all gone back to school. The Stemvicks from the Whitewater Baptist Church had their whole family here recently. They went caroling around town. Again, Happy Birthday to Patti Young and all January birthdays. Congratulations to the North Country Mavericks on their recent basketball games. There were games at the WHS. Taco soup was served and there was a silent auction. Happy Birthday to Christina and son w...

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|Jan 31, 2024

The weather is very spring like! It’s a great change from the subzero weather from a few weeks ago! The frozen pipes are all fixed, thank goodness! Remember, I’m writing the Loring news from the west side of Billings and the high temps this week are in the 50’s! There are a lot of pigeons around here, making a mess as we know they do around the granaries at Loring. Etta Blunt took 3rd place in wrestling in Glasgow on a Saturday and on Sunday she took 3rd in Malta where she wrestled up in weight...

Ken Blunt: It was the winter of 1978-79. The roads were blocked for extended periods of time. We were snowed in for over 30 days...snow was at the top of the wire fences. Myrtle Hould: We had lots of snow when I was a child, LOTS of snow. My brother Seymour was the oldest, (of 10 children) and Mother had knit a long scarf that we all hung on to and would help each other up when we fell...sometimes we fell deliberately and we would giggle. The snow was so deep. One year (1970's) Denver had to...

  • My Watch Keeps Me Going

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Jan 24, 2024

It’s hard to stay active in the middle of winter. Snow and bitter cold keep me inside the house, sunken deep in my favorite chair, mesmerized by ball games of little consequence. My watch, however, keeps me going. It tells me to stand if I’ve been sitting too long. It compliments me on the progress I make toward pre-programmed exercise goals, and it nags me to keep it up. “You can do it, Parker!” It records my daily mile walk, announcing the time elapsed through so many layers of clothing I have...

The weather changed and it is warmer which makes most of us happier! The chores are easier and the equipment starts better! But we also know that this won’t last too long! The pool here at Affinity had a broken pipe which in turn broke a piece on the furnace. It was only down for a week so I think the repair people really got to work! I took Zoey, my granddaughter, over for a swim on Saturday. Rita Frasure and I went to the symphony dress rehearsal on Friday. It was a wonderful treat! The Ahn T...

Greetings from the North Pole. It snowed and was -45 below last night in Whitewater. Some people declared it higher. Bad news, my water and sewer froze up. Sympathy to all who have some problems. A salute to the pioneers (including myself), who were raised without water and sewer/plumbing. We had to be strong. I’ll ask Pat Dunbar (a local plumber) to come and thaw it all. A few days ago, all basketball games and church were cancelled due to the weather. Now, farmers and ranchers are busy feeding...

  • PCN Brings Back Memories for Glasgow Reader

    Jan 17, 2024

Dear Editor and PCN Readers: I've been putting this off for some time and the time has come. My sister, Shelley Dunbar, after reading the PC News, has instructions to save those papers for me and sends them down via her or my brother, Jim. I can then read at my pleasure after a hard day of playing pinochle. After l read them I pass them on to my friends, Betty and Gene Sipe (former residents of Malta (he was Bowdoin Lake Manager, Betty worked at JCPenney who also enjoy each and every issue, but... • MT State Bar Exam's Jurisdiction Questioned

    Jan 17, 2024

Dear Editor, Our Montana code has about 70-75 occupations where if one wants, they can go to the state and take an exam. When they pass the exam they can then be qualified by the state to do business under their certification. These certifications are essentially under the jurisdiction of the state legislature. Not so with becoming an attorney. To get that certification, one has to first graduate from an "approved by an American Bar Association" college or school. Then and only then can one take their Montana State Bar exam - from the MT State...

  • I've Been Cold Before

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Jan 17, 2024

This must be why folks move to Arizona. For a few days now the temperature has hovered between barely survivable and colder-than-anyone-remembers. The minus 30 something I woke to this morning was a rerun of yesterday’s bitter cold. It’s been even colder in other parts of the state and I take solace in that. It’s seldom the case. Living on the Hi-line I’ve grown accustomed to the cold. I dress for it, donning long johns in October and not taking them off until spring, which up here means M...

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|Jan 17, 2024

Loring, and most of Montana, is experiencing very low temps, and a little snow. The weather had to be bad, the ballgames were postponed! I heard that exposed skin started to freeze in two minutes with these wind chill temps! The cold weather reminds me that I have my bubble solution down here! I’m taking it outside to blow some bubbles and see how they look in the freezing air. I probably will throw the boiling water into the frigid air and make snow! That one is dangerous because the water i...

Greetings from the North (rather, North Country) Pole. It snowed and turned c-c-cold! Whitewater, like most of Montana, is changeable. Again, Happy New Year 2024! On New Year’s Eve, the North 40 had a party with Chinese food as the special. It was very good! There were also sleigh rides for the children. Here is an excerpt from my dad’s book in 1909. Chapter XI New Friends - New School One day, in the summer of 1913, I was unloading hay at our place. I heard a noise and looked around. I saw wha...

Question: Did you make a New Year's Resolution and if so, how is it going? Kenzie LaBrie: No, I didn't make one and I don't know why. Blake Tharp: No. I really didn't want to make a resolution. Hudson Simons: Yes! I made a resolution to get better grades and it's going good so far. I have good grades this semester. Samme Gibbs: I did make a resolution – to wake up at 6:30 every morning and it failed (the first day!)....

  • Pastor Unterseher Returning to Malta

    Jan 10, 2024

I made it past PSA security at Billings International Airport and headed to Gate C to wait for my flight to Wolf Point. The call to board the aircraft was delayed due to cold weather and the possibility of a snowstorm. Passengers were getting restless from the uncertainty of the flight. The flight was finally cleared for departure and five relieved passengers made their way to the gate. Twenty minutes into the flight, we flew into a blizzard and lost sight of light from small towns along our...

  • Clause for a Cause

    Jan 10, 2024

Dear Editor: I just wanted to share this amazing man with you. Santa. This Santa does a great thing every Christmas season. He is truly Clause for a Cause. Each year he donates the proceeds from his visits with a specific charity to make our community/world a better place. This year the cause is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, all of the proceeds go to helping to find a cure. This one is close to our heart as my 9 year old nephew from Ballantine is afflicted with this disease. Just thought a shout...

  • VFW Responds to Anonymous Letter

    Jan 10, 2024

Dear Editor and PCN Readers: To the group of people who anonymously gave the VFW Auxiliary a letter on their feelings on the Veterans Day dinner, we would like to address some of your issues. 1) As far as the menu goes, we do not know who is a diabetic or not. We can not plan meals around everyone's health issues. We all have different ones. But on the other hand, you know if you are a diabetic or not; and if you can’t have two starches, then don’t eat one. 2) As far as it being crowded in the serving area, tables were already set up for us...

  • Fighting to Decrease Suicide Rate in Montana

    Jan 10, 2024

Dear Editor: I am writing to encourage everyone to join the fight to help decrease the suicide rate in Montana. We have ranked in the top three for suicides per capita for years. Now we know more knowledge and we need to utilize it in order to improve not only that terrible statistic, but to decrease the loss of life due to suicides and address the desperation that is causing our people to act. I know that is a big goal, but united we can do it! Some of you have already been introduced to the national hot line number 988, but we need EVERYONE,...

  • A Shocking Idea

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Jan 10, 2024

While packing up my hunting gear at the end of the season I realized Dot’s e-collar was switched on, the green light still blinking feebly. I turned it off and started to put it back in its box then realized I might need it again before next fall. Commonly referred to as a “shock” collar, it’s what I use to keep Dot in range, an electronic leash of sorts. Among the options on the controller are two small buttons for tone and vibrate, and a larger one that administers an electric shock. I call...

Here are some interesting facts from the Chinook Livestock News I get, owners Karla and Dexter Buck. 1. Scotland chose the unicorn as its national animal. 2. The Eiffel Tower gets taller in the summer. 3. Human teeth are the only part of the body that can't heal themselves. 4. We are more creative in the shower. 5. Supermarket apples can be a year old. 6. Venus is the only planet that spins clockwise. 7. Nutmeg is a hallucinogen. 8. Ketchup used to be sold as medicine. If it isn't worthy, its o.k. Happy New Year. PS. An additional New Year's...

Happy New Year! May each of you realize your dreams and goals! Diana Engel and Layne Engel invited me out for lunch one day after Christmas. It was so fun seeing Layne as a father to a two-year-old! Visiting with my previous comrade from the Whitewater teaching staff was the icing on the cake! I’ve received a few calls wishing me a happy new year from friends up north. Carol Lumsden said that Pete had the team out pulling the wagon for hayrides during New Year festivities! Sounds like a lot of f...

January 3: HAPPY NEW YEAR 2024 TO ALL FROM WHITEWATER, MONTANA!! Get well wishes to all who are sick. Happy Birthday to those celebrated in December, including Sommer Green. Over Christmas, there was a beautiful candlelight service at Whitewater Lutheran Church. The church was full, and I really enjoyed playing the familiar Christmas carols. There were many guests including a choir from Malta. They were children and combined with our Whitewater youth to sing. Another I visited with was Scot...

  • A Welcome from District Senator Tempel

    Jan 10, 2024

8 Happy New Year! As I watched the sunrise this first day of the new year, I was reflecting on this past year. Family and friends have all made an impact on Judy and my lives. I am thankful to everyone for the part you may have played in our lives these past years. As our state's House and Senate Districts have been redistricted and will be effective starting January 2025, I will be working with folks from the new area that was formerly Senator Mike Lang's district. I have been fortunate to...

  • A Hunt in the Cattails

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoors Columnist|Jan 3, 2024

The ground was white with frost when I climbed out of the truck. It almost looked as if it had snowed. In an hour, however, it would be gone, the ground bare and dry again under another cloudless sky. Dot sat patiently as I fastened the e-collar around her neck. Ace wandered to the other side of the truck, lifting his leg on the tire. I tested the beep on the collar and Dot squealed and started hoovering the grass at the edge of the cattails. Her attention was only a button away. Ace, deaf and...

  • Vacation and Vitamins Made a Difference

    Pierre Bibbs, Play Ball|Jan 3, 2024

This was a weird year. I loved a lot of things about 2023. My favorite thing was taking intentional time with my family. Earlier this year, we took our longest vacation in terms of time and distance away from home. We went to see my brother-in-law Sam Fauth, his wife Mirjam, and their children Noah, Livia, and Sofia. It was awesome experiencing a culture different from ours. It was a trip that our family will never forget. We will also never forget getting stuck at the airport in Denver and...
