M-ettes Second at Havre Lions Meet; Simonson shines for the Penguins

Girls

Malta scored 117 total points and was three points from tieing Havre, who won with 120 at the meet. Whitewater finished fifth with 26 points total.

Malta was led by freshman standout Sophie Stiles who won three events and placed second in two other events.

Stiles was in a close 100 meter race with North Star's Bettie Carlon, ultimately Stiles crossed the line as Carlon looked on. Stiles crossed the tape at 13.24 seconds, while Carlon was a mere .13th of a second behind. Stiles literally won by a hair.

Carlon and Stiles meet with each other again in jumping events. Carlon won both the long and triple jump but Stiles the younger of the two, showed improvement in the events, finishing second in both events with a 33'10" in the triple and 15'6.5" in the long jump.

Stiles also won the 300 hurdles with a time of 50.06 and the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.98 seconds, nearly two seconds faster than her closest foe, Delaney Spicher of North Star.

M-ette teammates Marley Manoukian, Mary Grace Kalal and Rheanna Messerly all fared well in the hurdle events as well.

Manoukian finished third in both events with a time of 18.32 seconds in the 100 hurdles and 52.96 in the 300 hurdles. Kalal finished the 100 hurdles fourth with a time of 19.23 seconds. She finished the 300 hurdles with a time of 54.40, good enough for sixth. Messerly finished the 100 hurdles in sixth after finishing in 20.14 seconds.

Manoukian finished fourth in the long jump with a distance of 14'1". Messerly finished sixth with a distance of 13'2.5".

Whitewater's Kourtney Simonson was impressive as it looked as though she sprinted through her first lap of the 800 meter run. Onlookers worried that she overdid it and would fall behind other runners, but the determined Penguin proved she could fly, posted a time of 2:31 in her first place finish. The finish was only three second slower than her all time best, which was 2:28, last year at divisionals.

Simonson also finished fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 30'.5" and fifth in the long jump, with a length of 13'7.5."

Simonson was also part of the Penguin's long relay team with Keira Simonson, Kayleigh Cummings and Larimie Scheffelmear. The team placed fourth with a time of 4:58.

The Penguins short relay team consisting of Ke. Simonson, Ko, Simonson, Scheffelmear and Cummings finished fifth with a time of 58.62.

M-ette Mary Grace Kalal threw the javelin well, throwing a distance of 86'9" and earning third in the event.

Riley Mortenson shaved a half second off of her mile time after finishing third with a time of 6:22. She also finished third in the two mile with a time of 14:43.

Darby Schye finished fourth in the shot put with a toss of 31'2" and fourth in the 200 with a time of 29.27 seconds.

Both Malta relay teams placed third in their respective races. The 4 x 100 (Manoukian, Kalal, Messerly and Schye) had a time of 55.92. The 4 x 400 team (Messerly, Jenise Amsestoy, Mortenson ans Adrianna Bibeau) had a time of 4:54.

Freshman Jada Nicholson had an impressive day, finishing second in the high jump clearing 4'8" to a very lucky Carlon who finished 4'8" and 4'10" though parts of her body hit the bar. The bar somehow remained in place and Carlon eventually cleared five feet.

Nicholson also won her heat in the 100 meter dash with a time of 14.53, however she finished tenth in the event.

Penguin Larimie Scheffelmear did well in her first meet, running the 300 hurdles and finishing seventh with a time of 55.49 seconds. She also cleared 4'6" in the high jump and placed fourth.

Freshman Shay Garfield continues to show improvement and it was most apparent in discus, as she took fifth with a throw of 85'9", nearly six feet better than her previous best.

The M-ettes are showing much improvement as the freshman portion of the team is pulling a lot of weight. They have a pretty tall order going against Glasgow, who has shown enough numbers to compete in class A.

Malta also competed in the Fergus Invitational and their next meet is in Malta next Tuesday April 29, starting at 2:30.

Whitewater is also improving, however they will need to raise scores as they hope to make noise in Class C, a class loaded with talent from Hinsdale to Chinook.
