*As a 60-year-old student seeking to become a teacher of English, Nels Sjoestroem and his fellow students at the University of Stockholm are required to spend a week at a school in an English speaking country to get some first-hand experience. Many choose to go to England, others to Australia. “I had to go to Malta, where the Fauth family is… and a good school where I can sit and observe things,” said Sjoestroem. Sjoestroem’s daughter is married to Samuel Fauth, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Fauth of Malta. Although he has been to the US many times, this was his first visit to Malta. He spent the last week observing and participating in the classrooms of Malta English teacher Kristina Hanson and Spanish and History teacher Kendra Veit.

*Two baby porcupines made an unexplained appearance in the City Park on Front Street, one morning last week. How they got there is a mystery, but they were probably found in the country and brought in and released by someone. During their stay in the big city the two rodents with erectile and easily detachable spines attracted quite a bit of attention from passersby.

*Dennis Goodheart flashed across finish lines for two wins at the Chinook Relays last Saturday, breaking two school records. With a time of 4:35.1 in the mile, he broke the school record for the second time in two weeks. His other record smasher was a time of 2:04.5 in the 880-yard dash. (880 yards = 804.672 meters)

*Experimental use of green-tinted newsprint in last week’s issue of the News was given almost unqualified approval by the numerous subscribers who wrote in about it in response to our request for reader judgement. In all but one instance the replies were favorable and enthusiastic.

A decision to participate in a local war on mosquitoes was reached by the city council at its session on Tuesday night. The entire city will furnish oil to cover such stagnant pools as may remain when the skeeter breeding season opens and most of the work will be done in cooperation with the reclamation service and the CCC.
