Malta girls place first in Glasgow, boys second at meet

The Malta golf teams showed much improvement at the Glasgow golf meet last Friday as the girls took first with a score of 507 and boys shot 373 but fell second to Glasgow by two strokes.

"It was our best weather day out and we golfed a little better which is nice to see as we are on the down side of the season," said Coach Nevrivy.

Malta's Senior Garrett Zanto won first place at the meet, scoring 83 and winning in a chip off against Glasgow's Luke Gunderson.

Keenan Vanwichen also made the top six at the meet, placing fifth with a score of 91 and defeating Shay Snider in a chip off round.

With the awful weather we had last week, we did a lot of chipping and putting," coach Lynne Nevrivy told the PCN. "We had two boys win in chip offs so maybe that practice came at the right time."

Jase Galt shot 100, Eli Waters 101, Collin Holman 108 and Tyler Ost 128.

The girls team was led by Kristi Granlund who shot 114, which is ten strokes better than her average.

"The girls grabbed the trophy from Plentywood by just 2 strokes," said Coach Nevrivy. "I think it might have been a few more strokes but I told the kids no circle 10s for the rest of the season."

Other golfers included senior Tyanna Dunbar who missed the top six by four strokes, her score was 122, Serena Stine 132, Cyra Mears 133, Kelsey Kuehn 138 and Taryn Shores 139.

"It's nice to see different golfers stepping up each meet. Now if we can get them all to step up at the same time that would be awesome."

Whitewater's Kayla Howard had another strong showing placing third in individual scores, with a score of 112.

The team had to reschedule the Malta Invitational for the second time this year, due to weather. Last Saturday's torrential down pour caused the school to make the cancel. On the bright side, the course will be a lot greener for the meet's new date May 7.

The team's next meet will be in Harlem at the Harlem Invitational on Friday if the weather can hold up.

Malta looks to be in good shape as tournaments draw near.
