M-ettes take second at divisionals; Mustangs place two at meet

The M-ettes did more than fine at the 2014 Northern B Track and Field meet in Great Falls. They not only showed up, they also placed second, thanks to seven individual athletes who placed in events. Those athletes will continue to the State B meet in Butte, this Friday.

Sophia Stiles led the charge, placing first in three events and placing in the top three in two others.

Darby Schye's heroics were seen in the shot put pit, as she took the divisional crown.

Stiles won the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.58. She also had the longest leap in long jump, with a jump of 17'.25". She also took the Triple Jump crown, by leaping 35'11".

Stiles placed second in the 300 hurdles, with a time of 47.57. Teammate Marley Manoukian was right behind, placing third with a time of 50.26.

Stiles placed third in the 100 meter dash, in a close one against Choteau's Savannah Stern, who won with a time of 13.08, Conrad's Makayla Barringer who crossed at 13.16. Stiles' time was 13.33. Glasgow's Megan Dailey was 13:38. Which means state could go anyone's way.

Darby Schye threw 36'2.25" in shot put, she is the second M-ette in a row to win the divisional crown in the event.

Schye continues a history full of great throwers in Malta's history. Brenna King won the event after throwing a 39'8.50" and took state with a throw of 40'9.75" last year.

Freshman Shay Garfield has been turning heads in recent meets in discus. She took second at the meet, with a throw of 98-5. Garfield will have to watch her back, because Fairfield's Kourtney Coverdell is last year's runner up, and is known to throw in the 110's. Darby Schye finished fifth in the event with a throw of 91'7". M-ette Mary Grace Kalal finished sixth, with a toss of 86'2".

Jada Nicholson tied second in the high jump, after clearing 5', Glasgow's Megan Dailey cleared 5'2". Other jumpers to clear 5'0" included Wolf Point's Shelby Hanks and Plentywood's Lindsay Wangerin.

Marley Manoukian, who placed in the 300 hurdles also tied for fifth in the pole vault, an event she has picked up in recent weeks. She cleared 8', tying with Shelby's Olivia Stewart.

Riley Mortenson placed sixth in the 1600 meter run, with a time of 5:54.44. She crossed the line only .05 of a second before Conrad's Taryn Erickson who posted a time of 5:54.49.

"We are pleased with our performances at the divisionals, but we are focused on what's in front of us at state," said Coach Tad Schye.

MUSTANGS

The Malta Mustangs will be taking only two athletes to Butte this Friday for the State B track and field meet.

Jase Bishop and Nathan Veit will throw in the javelin toss.

The District meet in Great Falls was Glasgow's to take, thanks in part to the talent and depth of the student body.

Glasgow scored 152 points at the Northern B meet, followed by Fairfield who scored 107 and Choteau, who scored 70. Malta scored three.

Jase Bishop threw the javelin 154' at the meet, he placed fifth at the meet. Nathan Veit placed sixth, with a throw of 150'4".

There were a few Mustangs that came really close to state including Tyson Carney who placed seventh in the javelin throw, after a toss of 149'6". Carney also tied for seventh in the pole vault, an event he picked up in recent weeks. He cleared 9'6", a height that was also cleared by Wolf Point's Brady Babb.

Keenan Schipman placed eighth in the 3200 meter race, with a time of 13:39.17.
