Sheriff Moran warns of recent scam in Phillips County

Recently the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office has been made aware of an increasing amount of SCAMS. Two of the current more popular ones are from people claiming to be from the Publishers Clearing House, and the Federal Court System.

Someone claiming to be from Publisher Clearing House contacts you by either mail, phone, or both claiming you have won cash or merchandise. To collect your prizes you need to send in money to them. They have even gone as far to make sure you are at home at a certain time and date when their representative will come to your house. This is a SCAM. Publishers Clearing House does not require you to give them money. Some of the calls will originate from the United States, but most are from overseas using magic jack computer generated phone calls.

Another SCAM that has found its way to Phillips County residents is someone claiming to be from a local or federal courts system, or law enforcement. They claim you missed a jury duty date or are delinquent on a fine for a traffic citation, and then request you send in money for the fine. Official looking letterhead is easy to generate with false addresses or phone number. Check the authenticity of the information given to you either by using your computer and the web, or contact my office for assistance.

Remember to never send money to anyone for anything you did not order. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is a SCAM. Please visit our web site at phillipscountysheriff.org for updates on SCAMS and other information.
