M-ette X-Country: Malta places second at the scenic Frazer Invitational Cross Country meet

The Malta M-ettes Cross Country team traveled East to Frazer Bearcub country and took second at the Frazer Invitational last Thursday. The team was led by sophomore Sophia Stiles, who took third with a time of 21:10.

"The beautiful panoramic vista that greeted us as we arrived at the Frazer Cross Country Meet was breath taking," said M-ette Cross Country coach Thea Solberg. "Looking out over the prairies and wheat fields that bordered on the east and west made their way down the hill to the beautiful tree lain Missouri River below. We set out with the rest of the teams that would be participating, walking the three miles to learn the course and would soon learn that what goes down must come up and not just once, but three times. As we walked up and down the hills we realized that this was going to be one of the toughest courses we've run on this season. Add to that the smoky haze and a million mosquitoes to swat, we were in for a challenge."

Josie Braaten of Glasgow was the eventual winner of the high school girl's 3 mile race of 43 participants and ran it with a time of 20:01. Second place honors went to Sierra Summers of Wolf Point with a time of 20:16.

Malta's Sophia Stiles ran a battle between Amanda Wolff of Glasgow and Kensey Keil of Plentywood who traded places throughout the race with Sophia settling for third place and a time of 21:10, posting her best time this season.

"I'm pretty sure (Sophia) had to have passed them on the last hill, which takes tremendous strength," Coach Solberg told the PCN.

Hailey Nicholson ran steady over the hilly course despite a shoulder problem and got fourteenth place, just a couple places shy of the metal winners with a time of 24:07, one of her best times this season.

Joanie Sjostrom really pushed up those long hills so she wouldn't lose any time and showed her strength and finished sixteenth with a time of 24:26, shaving off over twenty seconds from the tough Malta meet of the previous week.

Eva Harms ran strong and steady and came in nineteenth with a time of 25:05.

Monicha Williamson ran steady and pushed her way and settled for twenty fifth with a time of 26:27.

Jada Nicholson made her way along the course fighting her own battle being slightly under the weather and finished in thirtieth place with a time of 28:20.

TaChante' Cole ran the challenging course and eventually kicked it in at the finish to place thirty fourth and a time of 30:13.

Sarah Ware, running her second meet of the season bettered her time from Wolf Point and finished thirty eighth with a time of 33:14.

Twelve schools were represented but only three teams fielded full teams for scoring:

Glasgow 36 points

Malta 77 points

Circle 122 points

"Overall, I feel that this race was quite challenging. This particular group of athletes representing the Malta Cross Country team had never run Frazer's course before," said Coach Solberg. "Walking over the course and seeing the long hills was very intimidating. But it is good to challenge ourselves and see where our weaknesses are and we are definitely not so strong on the hills."

"Pushing yourself up a hill takes a lot of strength and stamina and we need to keep working hard so that we are in good shape for the hilly state meet in Helena later in October," she continued.

The team's next action with be this Saturday, September 27 at Fort Peck for the Scottie Cross Country Invitational, which by the way is the flattest course we run on.

The meet takes place at the Downstream Campground Nature Trail at 10.
