Local News: The Glasgow News says that when Phillips County is created it will cost Valley County 36 ½ percent of its revenues.

A fellow by the name of Howe grew tired of staying in the county jail at Glasgow and early Tuesday morning proceeded to lock the jailer in a cell and made off. It was an old trick and a jailer who would let a prisoner get away in such a manner is easy.

Last year our farmers realized over eight billion dollars on their crops. And yet, some long-legged, gander-shanked, addle-patted and brainless nincompoops assume an air of condescension when honoring themselves by addressing the man without whom the world would starve to death.

Headline: Mustangs meet Conrad team in title tilt

With the Northern Montana Class B football championship at stake, Malta’s Blue and White Mustangs are preparing this week for the Saturday night tilt in which they confront Conrad. The game will be played at Conrad.

Financial considerations made it necessary to play the title match on the enemy’s field. Lack of local support has resulted in a substantial loss on each home game this season, so that Conrad’s offer for the game there was more attractive than Malta could make for the game here. Hence Malta’s first district championship team in many years must play for regional honors in foreign territory.

Editor’s Note: There are no editions of the Phillips County News for October, 1964 at the Phillips County Museum. If you have any copies of those papers, the museum would love to add them to their archives.

Headline: City to replace 26,000 sandbags

It’s been three years since the infamous flood of 1986 sent many Phillips County residents scurrying to the banks of the Milk River in various locations to fill and place sand bags.

Malta City Council members, however, are still dealing with the aftermath, mostly a financial one. City fathers received notice recently that the city still has to replace 26,000 sandbags they received from the Disaster and Emergency Division. Mayor Garry Adams said cost of the sandbags will be about $13,000. The good news is that federal and state agencies will share in the bulk of the cost leaving Malta about $3-4,000 to pay out of local funds.
