Berniece E. Hotchkiss

Centenarian and lifetime North Fork Area resident, Berniece E. Hotchkiss, passed away on Monday, October 27, 2014, at Crossroads Assisted Living Center in Delta, Colorado. She was 104 years of age.

As per Berniece’s request, no services will be held.

Berniece E. Carnine was born September 17, 1910, to John F. and Mamie (Spencer) Carnine in Paonia, Colorado. She spent her childhood in Paonia, where she graduated from Paonia High School. After graduation, she attended Barnes Business College.

Berniece married the love of her life, Adair John Hotchkiss, II on February 25, 1933, at her home in Paonia. He preceded her in death on February 2, 1980, in Mesa, Arizona.

She and Adair resided in Hotchkiss, Colorado, until 1952, when they moved to Montana, where they owned and operated a cattle ranch 40 miles north of Malta. They returned to Hotchkiss in 1973.

Berniece was a member of the Hotchkiss Community United Methodist Church; P.E.O., Chapters AK and GT; Hotchkiss Wednesday Club; Bridge Clubs, and Eastern Star.

Berniece is survived by her son, John Hotchkiss, and daughter, Mary Farmer and spouse, Chuck, all of Hotchkiss, Colorado; grandchildren Jody Labuda, Val Gaffield, Brian (Kip), Jim, and Patrick Farmer; ten great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; a niece, Norma Golding (Jerry), and nephew, John Carnine (Erna).

Berniece was preceded in death by her two sisters, brother, husband and her daughter Helen Wadley.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made in Berniece’s memory to Hope West Hospice, P. O. Box 24, Delta, Colorado, 81416, or to the charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.
