M-ette Volleyball: Malta lands four onto All-Conference team

The Malta M-ettes volleyball team had a few All-Conference selections after posting their best year in recent history.

Senior Larimie Scheffelmear was a team captain this year and she played strong all year, earning All-State Honors and First-Team All-Conference honors.

"She definitely deserved it," said M-ette head coach Julia Tatafu. "She was an all around great volleyball player."

Coach Tatafu noted that not only was Scheffelmear a powerful hitter, but she also recorded a tremendous amount of digs.

"If she didn't lead the team in digs every game, she got second," she said. "If she didn't lead in kills she got second. She was constantly a leader stat-wise for our team and a type of player that could do it all."

Markelle Lett has been a tremendous athlete in every sport she has participated in during her high school career and this volleyball season she was rewarded, earning first team All-Conference honors.

"She's another great player that deserves All-Conference. She definitely led our team in assists," Coach Tatafu said. She was our main setter on the team. She continuously led in aces for a few games and digs.

When the team would try to slow up opposing hitters, the team would setup blocks so that Markelle would be set to defend kill attempts.

"She could dig 'em up like no tomorrow," Coach Tatafu said.

Lett, like Scheffelmear was named team captain in the beginning of the year and she led by example.

Though she is a great coach, who could choose her own captains, Tatafu admitted that she did not select Scheffelmear and Lett.

"My varsity team vote and they usually always 99% of the time pick the girls that I would have picked for captain," she said. "They just know. Larimie and Markelle led by example on the court and off the court."

Coach Tatafu also noted that Markelle and Larimie put the team above themselves like the theme of the 2014, "We not me."

"They are both beautiful girls inside and out," said Coach Tatafu. "Our team did a great job making sure they led by the model, that always put 'team' first. That's why we did so well."

Darby Schye earned second team All-Conference honors.

"Schye was one of the biggest blockers in the conference. She led our team in blocks and she led in kills every game or was second. Her and Larimie were always back and forth with kills," Coach Tatafu said.

It was because of Schye's aggressiveness at the net, that the M-ettes were able to cool down so many hard hitters in the conference.

"Blocking was one of the biggest parts of our defense this year and she was a big part of that," Coach Tatafu said.

On top of her strong net game, Schye also had a mean serve.

"There would be times that we would be behind in a game six to eight points and she would just get in a sync serve after serve to get us back into the game," Coach Tatafu said.

According to the coach, Schye was also a huge mental leader on the court, often times bringing the team into the huddle.

She noted Schye was also one of the most encouraging cheerleaders on the team.

"She had a strong year," Coach Tatafu said.
