Malta Wrestling: Recap and results from previous meets; Big Sandy Mixer and Choteau Invitational this weekend

Last weekend the Malta Wrestling team went to the Cut Bank Invitational and scored 56 points.

The team was led by 113 pounder Trey Simanton, who placed fourth in his weight class.

Wrestling at 138 pounds Keenan Schipman went 4-2 at the tourney.

Mark Missildine, wrestled at 103 pounds and went 1-2.

120 pounder Kaden Moore went 2-2.

Ceaton Moore, who wrestled at 138 pounds also went 2-2.

At 152 pounds, Travis Epperson went 0-2 as did Chase Murray who wrestled in his first meet of the year.

One day prior the team participated in the Chester Mixer, here are the individual results:

102-Mark Missildine 0-2, 113-Trey Simanton 2-0, 120-Kaden Moore, 132-Ceaton Mears 1-1, 138- Keenan Schipman 0-2, 152-Travis Epperson 1-1.

The team faced five schools in the Huntley Project duals in Worden, on December 20.

The day was highlighted by Malta's 48-30 win against Class AA Billings West.

The team had seven pins in that victory.

Malta also defeated Laurel 42-18.

They lost 33-30 to Billings Senior. Schipman had a pin in 3:04.

Simanton also recorded a pin at :45 in his match.

The team lost their last showdown against Columbus, who won 42-30.

Moore had a pin at 1:43.

Simanton had a pin at :21. Simanton went 5-0 throughout the duals.

In the Shepherd Duals on December 20, Malta defeated Broadus 36-15, but lost 30-39 to Class A's Hardin and 18-48 to Shepherd.

The team fared well at the Shelby Mixer, a one day event on January 3.

Quintan Boos, Kaden Moore and Trey Simanton all went 3-0 at the event.

"Trey Simanton is looking pretty solid at 113," Coach LaBrie told the PCN. "He started at 120 and got down to his fighting weight."

Like Simanton, Kaden Moore will likely lose a few pounds to find his optimal fighting weight.

"Kaden is still trying to find his fighting weight and he will probably get down to 120 but he's finding some success at 126."

Instead of losing weight to make a certain class, the team tried Quintan Boos out at heavyweight at the small mixer.

Boos who weighs 195 pounds, did not disappoint.

"We're not set at keeping him there, but where he feels best going forward," Coach LaBrie said.

Coach LaBrie's aim is to find Boos a class that he is comfortable at, so he can make a run in the district tourney and place in the state tournament.

"With Quintan he has a good ability to move," Coach LaBrie said noting that the heavyweight class has gotten a lot lighter and faster than it was in the past.

The team's next meet is the Big Sandy Mixer tomorrow.

After the Mixer the team will take part in the two-day Choteau Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
