One Nation, Under God
The Lady Coyotes destroyed the Harlem JV Wildcats 77-33 last Tuesday, February 3. A 44 point game.
"It's nice to see the kids be able to get the running clock while having so much fun," Dodson Head Coach Brandy Hunter told the PCN noting that the team never backed down even with a 20 point lead.
Janessa had the greatest single performance that Phillips County has seen in a while.
Henry posted a remarkable 43 points, 12 steals, 12 defensive rebounds and 11 assists.
A QUADRUPLE-DOUBLE!
"I didn't even know I scored 43 points. I was just focused," Senior guard Janessa Henry told the PCN after the game. "I just wanted to be more aggressive this game because my season is coming to an end. I was just focused on the game."
Henry was all over the court, playing suffocating defense and terrorizing the Lady Wildcats on offense.
"She's a strong leader. She knows the game. She's able to recognize those passes, she had lots of steals," Coach Hunter said. "Her awareness on the court helped her tonight. She gave 110 percent, 110 percent of the time. You couldn't have asked for more hustle from her, she's definitely a team leader."
When asked if she had any more in the tank for the tournaments coming up, Henry responded, "Oh yeah!"
Though Henry had a monster game, she was not alone. Jacina Doney shined for Dodson that night, scoring 16 points, had 11 rebounds and had three steals, giving her a double-double.
The younger players urged by Coach Hunter also played excellent that night.
''We've talked a lot about how we just have to come out and run our offense, execute our defense and improve on our blocking out," Coach Hunter said. "Reducing our turnovers was a big thing for us tonight. We went from 21 and 23 last week, to about 13 tonight."
Shawnee KillEagle scored nine points. Kyla Racine scored four points. Donna Dale had three points and Wozek Chandler had two points.
"I think we played this game better as a team than we've played in other games that we've played so far," Henry said.
The Lady Coyotes are young and are still relatively new to high school ball, but Henry's leadership helps a lot.
"Whenever they mess up in the games, you can just see it on their face, so me and Jacina just try to bring up their spirits and try to make their confidence go up," Henry said.
The win was against Doney's old team, many of the players on the JV team are players she has played with in recent years.
"It didn't feel right, but it was a good game I guess. It was fun," Doney said. "I thought that Harlem played hard."
The Lady Coyotes are warming up at the right time, and will look to challenge the tougher teams in the 3-C District Tournament next weekend.
Still the team's oldest players know there are some things the team needs to work on, going into the post-season.
"I need to work on my legs, so I can dunk it," Doney said with a smile. "I also want the younger girls to know that us seniors have had a great time with them on the court."
Henry took a more direct approach.
"We need to work on running our plays, because when we play, we just do whatever," Henry said. "If we run our plays we will definitely be able to get more points."
