Penguin girls commandeer second at Porcupine Meet

The Whitewater Lady Penguins track team took second place at the Porcupine Invitational track meet hosted by Nashua at Glasgow High School last Friday.

Whitewater, who scored 75, only lost by two points to Class B's Wolf Point Wolves who scored 77.

The team was led by Senior Kourtney Simonson, who took first place in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1 minute, and 5.9 seconds.

Ko. Simonson also took second in the 800 with a time of 2:39.4. She would also take fifth in the 1600 with a time of 6:25.7, which is her personal best in the event.

The long relay team consisting of Kayleigh Cummings Angel Tovar, Larimie Scheffelmear and Ko. Simonson took first at the meet with a time of 5:32.9.

Keira Simonson placed second in discus with a throw 84-2. She nearly placed in shot put, taking seventh with a throw of 23-00.

Cummings posted a new personal best in shot put with a throw of 28 feet, four inches.

Cummings took fifth in the 3200 with a time if 17:04.10. She also placed fifth in discus with a throw of 75-07, which is her best throw this season. She took fifth in javelin after leaving a mark of 86-02, which is her new personal best.

Tatum Moore placed second in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 18.3.

"I just gotta learn to reach instead of letting my arms fly all over the place," Moore said.

It was also the first meet that Moore would take off from the blocks, rather than from a standing position. She did so in the 100 meter dash as well, which helped but Moore admitted she could've done better.

Scheffelmear took third in the 3200 with a time of 15:36. Scheffelmear also took sixth in the 1600 posting a time of 6:32.2.

The short relay team consisting of Ke. Simonson, Scheffelmear, Ko. Simonson and Moore finished third with a time of 56.4.

Angel Tovar took sixth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 22.9. She took eighth in shot put with a throw of 22-10. She posted a time of 34.24 in the 200 meter dash.

Alexandria Santillan showed improvement in discus, taking seventh with a throw of 71-00 her new personal best.

Santillan also improved in shot put leaving a mark at 22-06, which is another new personal best.

Serena Sanguins had a time of 1:52.44 in the 400 meter dash, which is her new personal best. Sanguins also had new personal bests in discus (66-10) and in javelin (48-10). She also posted a throw of 21-06 in shot put.
