Mark Twain on advertising

When Mark Twain was editing the Virginia City Enterprise, a superstitious subscriber once wrote and said he had found a spider in his paper and asked whether it meant good or bad luck.

Mark replied and said it meant neither good luck or bad luck. The spider was merely looking over the pages to find out what merchant was not advertising, so that it could spin its web across his door, and lead a free and undisturbed existence forever after.

Vandals destroy underpass Christmas display

The spirit of Christmas got quite a jolt in Malta Saturday morning when it was discovered that during the night vandals had almost totally wrecked the Santa Claus and his reindeer display which had decorated Malta's underpass for several years during Christmas season. Most of the antlers of the reindeer were torn off as well as Santa's head.

The pieces torn off were then torn into smaller bits and thrown into the bottom of the underpass. Malta police are investigating the vandalism, which amounts to about $400 damage, but reports no progress in finding the persons responsible. All the remains were taken down and will not be put up again this year.

Police report, car mishap and deer theft

Icey streets were accredited for the car mishaps in Malta over the Thanksgiving weekend. Three car accidents and a deer taken from a parked car were reported by Police Chief Robert Olson.

A light pole in from of the Trafton Dorr store was tipped over by a car...about $300 of damage was reported and the driver was charged with reckless driving. Sunday at Fifth Avenue and First Street East, about 4 p.m., a car driven by a Loring resident slid into a parked car causing about $300 in damage. The driver was charged with failure to yield the right of way.

Friday night a deer was reported taken from the top of a car from North Dakota that was parked in front of the Great Northern Hotel.

Local reservist has bag packed, waiting

A Malta man has his bags packed for Saudi Arabia, but he is not sure whether he'll ever have to use them.

Gaylord Olson is living with the day to day knowledge that the Army Reserve unit of which his is a member, the 159th Support Group, Helena, a quartermaster unit, could be out on active duty at any time and shipped in a matter of days to duty in Saudi Arabia.

Olson joined the reserve unit on Oct. 29, 1965. Before moving to Malta three years ago, he lived in Big Timber which is considerably closer to Helena.

"It's not comfortable looking at those packed bags," Olson acknowledges. "I wake up every day looking at CNN thinking maybe today they'll say we're halting all activations."
