One Nation, Under God

No new resolution here

It’s around this time of year I get a real hankering for Mountain Dew. If you know me then you know that my vice used to be a certain neon colored drink made by Pepsi-Co.

It wasn’t just the original flavor that tickled my fancy, it was the orange flavored Livewire, the purple colored Pitch Black and red Code Red Mountain Dew flavors that I craved.

I get the craving because on December 31, 2009, I gave up pop with the intention of not drinking it until 2020. In other words ten years.

Many of you know that. But many of you don’t know that for a solid week I went vegan.

That’s right no meat or animal by-product foods for a whole week.

I was in college at the time, so I had a few people help me on my journey. The salad bar was my best friend at times, though those meals consisted of spinach, other veggies and lemon juice. My friends and I made a game of it by going to various grocery stores and seeing what I could eat.

The weirdest thing was when I attempted to cook tofu. If you don’t know what tofu is, stay away. I had no business cooking that junk. I must’ve done it wrong because it tasted like nothing.

I will say if it is prepared right it’s legit if you’re into that kind of thing.

During my time as a vegan, there were many things as a self-proclaimed “fat man” that I did that were despicable. My most heinous offense was eating pizza crust and sauce without cheese or toppings, which in hindsight may or may not have been vegan, but it felt like I was sinning by desecrating my slice of pizza.

After my week of no meat, cheese or other foods that are a staple in my life, I lost it. At exactly midnight on the seventh day, I had a basket full of meatballs and then they magically disappeared. I got really sick afterwards, but I’m glad I tried it.

Am I contemplating giving up meat for 2016? Never. I don’t believe in that. Though, personally I believe I could if I had the proper resources. I have to admit though; it would be hard to live meatless for a year. I simply love beef, chicken and seafood too much.
