One Nation, Under God

So many things to celebrate, so little time

Did you know there are 102 “National Day of . . .” things to celebrate during the month of August? According to the website nationaldaycalendar.com, in the month of August has three and a half things to celebrate per day (and sending the kid back to school isn’t even on the list.)

That’s a lot of cake.

A little investigating on the old inter-web quickly brought me to the conclusion that all one needs to do to get a “National Day of…” is make the declaration that, for example, Tuesday, January 5, is National Mark Hebert is Emperor of Tasmania Day. Post your “day” on social media, hope it gains traction with the masses and with a little luck you can be celebrating “National Leave me the Heck Alone Day” (FYI, I will be busy lording over people that day and will, in fact, leave you alone.)

I came to discover all the “National Days of” when a friend of mine living in Texas posted a picture of his black lab with the hashtag #nationaldogday. It took me all of 15-seconds to find a picture of my pooch and post her loving mug on my Facebook page. Stella, my six-year-old Chihuahua, is oblivious to the day as everyday, at least in her tiny eyes, is “National Stella Day.” To celebrate, aside from her pic on the web, Stella will get an extra treat this afternoon and I won’t bat an eye when she does her butt-rub-scrub on the rug in the bathroom.

While I am in favor of the dog day, some of the things to celebrate in August are down-right stupid (though that is just my opinion.) August 6 was National Fresh Breath day and I would be fine with all 365-days of the year falling under this category…24-hours seems way too short. The day before Fresh Breath Day was National Underwear Day. On that day, people are encouraged to take selfies in their skivvies and post them online. I’m going to go out on a ledge here and assume nobody wants to see me dressed in that fashion and the feeling is mutual.

A few of the more obscure days of celebration in August include I LOVE my Feet day – gross – Webmistress Day – uh, what? – and National Lazy Day, which I have no time for . . . there is work to be done, people!

The last real holiday of the summer, Labor Day, is this weekend. Labor Day is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers and, lucky me, I get to labor on the day (work to be done, remember?)

I hope you and your family has a wonderful Labor Day, thanks for reading and aloha.
