AMX Benefit Raises $2,500

Friends, family and a few spectators gathered together at the Dodson Fairgrounds for the final Dodson Speedway event of the season. This race was the annual benefit race with proceeds to go to Russell Jaynes in his battle with cancer.

The event raised over $2500 for the day, which was limited to a one day fun race due to impending rain reports. The locals were hospitable and as always, welcomed the guest racers with a fine feed throughout the day. Silent auction items were bid on through the day and when bidding closed at 6 p.m. a lot of happy bidders took home some nice items. The donated auction items brought in just short of $1300.

Racing for the fun of it and for the cause, the drivers that paid the $50 entry fee were generous in their return of all winnings back to the benefit kitty.

When the checkered flags came down, the Super Stock driver was Brett Jaynes taking first place and Wes Lundstrom claiming 2nd. In the Stock category, Dustin McKinney was victorious in 1st place and David Jaynes would take home 2nd. For a change, there were still cars running at the end of the two races and a Powder Puff race ran three cars and Maria Brown claimed the trophy, followed by the Pitman Race in which Mike Plouffe managed to pull off the win.

The annual Sid Hould Hard Luck Trophy was eagerly claimed by Mike Plouffe, who now has four in his collection.

Since (for the first time in a long time) there were still cars running following the puff and pitman, a category was added and justly called the Champion of Champions Race - an event which saw seven run - for the fun of it - and a trophy was presented to David Jaynes.

The crowd was large, but it was a dedicated one - dedicated to the sport but more importantly this weekend, dedicated to the cause. As Keith Cowan of Turner, President of the Dodson Speedway stated, "... it's all just for fun..the cause is the goal..." he said. "Had I been racing, I would have gladly just gotten on the track to be here - no real rush or push to beat anyone...just be here for the cause".

Though a small group, volunteers are what they are - volunteers. Comments were made that there wasn't enough advertising.... the door to volunteer is always open, come on in. As stated, when it comes down to the final weeks, with the men busy with farming, ranching and work, sometimes it's a committee of two that pulls this all together.

Thank you is an understatement for the crew that assisted with the food, the treats, managing the silent auction, and all those that donated to the auction to make it such a success. It wouldn't have happened without the helping hands and hearts that believe in paying it forward....we never know what tomorrow will bring... for us....! The Dodson Speedway extends a special thank you to all those that came out, warmed the bleachers in the fairground stadium and made the final race of 2016 a success. A huge thank you, also, to the trophy sponsors, the trophies made a lot of dusty, grimy, and greasy faces smile with appreciation.
