Grand View Hospital

The Grand View Hospital, conducted by C.A. Trusty in the residence formerly owned by Wallace Coburn, is one of the latest enterprises to be starting in Malta. Mr. Trusty has made improvements to the property and is prepared to take care of the sick.

Mr. Trusty is now selling hospital tickets at 50 cents each and are good for one month. These tickets entitle the holder to a bed in the hospital and services in case of illness free of charge, but of course do not include the services of a physician. The rates for services at the hospital to those not holding tickets has been fixed at a rate from $12 to $15 per week.

The institutions starts out with fine prospects of success.

Quarter million bushels grain shipped

So far the four Malta elevators have been able to handle all grain offered, but how long this can continue is a matter of conjuncture, with the car shortage growing more acute daily.

More than 190 cars of grain have been shipped by the elevators in this city this season, or in round numbers over quarter of a million bushels. Every day and all day long a string of teams is lined up in front of the elevators awaiting their turn to dispose of their valuable loads.

Montana Diamonds

Leon Reed and Co., the Malta jeweler, received last week from Minneapolis four Montana diamonds cut from a stone found by Miss Grace Anderson on her farm eight miles north of Malta. The largest of the stones will weigh more than a karat. Two weeks ago, Miss Anderson discovered a peculiar looking stone while riding over her ranch and was inducted to bring it to our local jewelers on account of its unusual brilliancy. Another stone, similar in composition, has been found by Mrs. Richard Clark who resides in Miss Anderson's neighborhood.

Seven Boy Scouts pass Merit Badge exam last night

Assistant Scoutmaster Robert Hooloran said this morning that seven Boy Scouts had passed Merit Badge examinations at the regular troop meeting held in City Hall Tuesday night. Scouts that passed the Merit Badge examinations are as follows:

Max Skowler, nature; Francis Kesler, Scout Oath Law and other fundamentals of scouting, also knots; Stewart Thompson, scout pace and thrift; Eldon Grove, scout pace; Glen Stadsklev, scout pace; Lee Robinson, flag; Lawrence Castlemen, knots.

Here's one lady who had courage; Goodbye Mr. Bear.

A story and pictorial proof that many women still possess a courage similar to that of their pioneer predecessors has been revived here by Felix Durocher, whose mother, Mrs. Alfonse Durocher, killed a black bear at her home near Big Fork several weeks ago.

The Durochers have a home on the shore of Flathead Lake. Mrs. Durocher was busy working in the house when she heard a commotion outside. She looked out her door and saw the bear eating apples she had gathered. Instead of running or screaming, as most women and possibly men would do, Mrs. Durocher calmly picked up a rifle and with one shot consigned Brother Bear to another world.

Mr. Durocher was janitor at the courthouse here nine years ago.

Penguins move on to state test

The Whitewater Penguins' girls basketball squad has earned a trip to the state tournament in Lewistown.

The Penguins were edged out 57-54 in the divisional championship contest with perennial for Opheim. Having defeated Westby, the Penguins entered the championship game calmly assured of a state tourney invite with the prospects of a challenge game.

Kerry Simonson racked up 25 game high points and her 10 rebounds led the Penguins.

M-ettes headed to state despite double OT loss to Fairfield

The Malta M-ettes prefer life in the fast lane. But they were in anything but high gear during much of the recent divisional tournament in Lewistown.

In Fact, the Fairfield Eagles used a frustrating low gear offense to down the M-ettes 39-37 in double overtime to take the title.

Skyla Sisco and Cindi Wiederrick led the way with 10 points each.

Dinosaur museum takes a step forward

A proposed dinosaur museum/park in Malta made a major commitment to move forward Tuesday morning when an agreement was signed committing the sale of the Jan's Floral and Greenhouse property to the Montana Department of Commerce.

The property just west of the Phillips County Museum on Highway 2 East will be the site of the new museum/park which is being funded by a $500,000 allocation approved in the final days of the state legislature through the efforts of Rep. Wayne Stahl and Sen. Sam Kitzenberg.
