One Nation, Under God

Very grateful to MHS Honor Society and WWP

Greetings to the editor!

I am so proud of the MHS Honor Society group, who raised funds for Wounded Warrior Project, and for the Angel Program (p. 4b, PCN 11/23)!

I would like to share how our family has been personally impacted by Wounded Warrior Project (WWP).

In January, 2014, our youngest son was medically evacuated from Afghanistan, during his fourth combat deployment. He was returned to base at Anchorage, Alaska, where he would eventually begin to recover from the damages of war.

A close friend of Joshua's was serving at the base EOD shop. Over time, this friend became acutely aware of the extent of Josh's injuries. The friend, Eric, made a vow that he would do everything he could to help Joshua recover. When Eric retired from the Air Force, he applied to work for the WWP. After he was hired, he asked to be assigned as a mentor, to his friend, Josh.

I met Eric this past August, during a phone conversation with him. Eric revealed that he had been working "behind the scenes" for at least two years, to help our son! I learned that he had done extensive work, to get his friend admitted to a hospital that specializes in treating combat- damaged people. WWP covered the co-pay after the VA paid their portion. WWP paid for our son's transportation to the "lower 48", and also for the round trip of another friend who needed to accompany Josh.

Eric was so glad, in August, that there were WWP funds to help our son. He said that WWP had been suffering from a drop in contributions, and the Alaska branch was struggling financially.

A few weeks after my initial conversation with Eric, he reported that he and the entire WWP staff in Alaska had been laid off, due to lack of funding.

Eric has since been hired at the Chris Kyle Center in Anchorage, where he continues to devote his energies to the healing of others.

I wanted that group of honor society students, and others, to have this glimpse at the integrity and dedication of those who work for Wounded Warriors Project.

With a grateful heart,

Janice Roberts
