VFW Buster Deo Post honors students

VFW Buster Deo Post 4067 of Malta recently honored students who entered the competitions offered through the organization.

Voice of Democracy essay contest winner at the local level, Andrea Rutledge of Big Sandy (third from the left), also took 1st place at the District level. She was awarded a check and certificate from both levels. Her award was presented by Commander Jim Layton (on the right) and also present were Ret. Col. Donald Klinko, of the VFW and Cheryl Wallace, President of the VFW Auxiliary. Andrea is the daughter of Kelly and Kristie Rutledge. She is a military family in that her late grandfather, John W. Korsbeck, was in the Green Berets. Her late grandmother, Judy Korsbeck, and her mom, Kristie have been active members and officers of the local Auxiliary.

In the competition for the Patriot’s Pen essay, local winners were honored and recognized three students for their work. Third place winner was Sage Wienke, second place was Kayla Judd and first place winner was Sidney Meeks. All three entries won at the local level.

Sidney Meeks also won the competition at the District 5 level and her entry was sent on to the State level competition where she placed 2nd in Montana. She and her parents were guests of honor at the winter conference held in Great Falls in late January were she was awarded her certificate and cash. Sidney also read her essay in the absence of the first place winner who did not attend. The theme this year was “The America I Believe In”. For her efforts and accomplishments, Sidney also received a check from local, district and state levels.

Commander Jim Layton thanked the staff at the Malta Middle School for their efforts and involvement in the programs and competitions offered for the youth. Mrs. Shyla Clausen and Mr. Shawn Bleth were in attendance at the award ceremony and are supportive of the VFW projects.

Malta students again brought honor to the school, the local VFW and should be commended and proud of their endeavors. Thank you to all who participated.
