100 years ago

March 8, 1917

A letter from J. F. Kilduff described the good time the Malta contingent was having in Honolulu. Enjoying the warm temperature and flowers in bloom, "Bob" Trafton was feeling so young he was threatening to join the Boy Scouts, Kilduff said.

County residents subscribe $1,020 of $1,250 needed to build a church for the Methodist.

Trafton-Dorr Company retired "Jumbo," a horse which had pulled the delivery wagon and drayline vehicle for 14 years. Jumbo lost his job to a Studebaker truck. (Bet he's horse laughing now!)

Daddy Minugh was down from Harlem with Lon Ellis to attend a meeting of the local gun club. Ellis told his bear stories and Minugh swore to 'em, according to the Enterprise.

The Woman's Club continued its agitation for a City garbage collection system and also was agitating for the establishment of a County nurse.

The court action by Lee Booth against the Ruby Mine was decided with a verdict of $1,000 against the mine. The case was appealed. Jurymen included John Cavanagh, H. C. Dobbs, Martin Nelson, Peder Paulson, Roy Dillan, R. H. Beam, Ed Siegert, Oscar Kittleson, W.T. Fanning, J. L. Moore., J. M. Brayton and Ole Field.

March 12, 1942

Labor shortage makes Jap help acceptable

One hundred and seventy five beetgrowers and townspeople representing the western half of the Milk River Valley held a public meeting in Malta the other night and went on record as willing to accept Japanese labor in order to ensure harvest crop this fall. A suitable resolution was adopted and forwarded to federal authorities and these laborers will be secured if the government cooperates.

Local farm couple observe 50th anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Waters, pioneers of the Pleasant Valley View community, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last Sunday at the home of their daughter, Ms. Anne Sutton. The dinner was served at 2 o'clock to close friends and relatives of the couple. A beautiful two-foot, four-tier wedding cake, baked by Mrs. Elizabeth Hoagland and Mrs. John Sutton, was a special feature of the day they received many useful and beautiful gifts.

Mr. and Mrs. Waters homesteaded 16 miles Southeast of Malta in 1914 and have lived there ever since, except from 1938 to 1940, when they resided at Alberton. They have three children, Willie Waters of Zortman, Edgar of Essex, Miss., and Mrs. Sutton of Malta, and six granddaughters, two grandsons and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Waters is 75 years old and Mr. Waters 70.

March 16, 1967

Eighth-grade basketball team is still undefeated

The Malta eighth-grade basketball team ended the second undefeated season recently. The seventh graders lost one game this season.

The Malta seventh and eighth graders recently defeated the Glasgow team 72-63 at the last game of the season. Three high scorers for Malta were Craig Stiles with 21 points, Duane Walker 16 and Bruce Bruckner 10.

The Malta team defeated Hays 97-55 in the second game of the evening. Duane Walker led the Malta scores of 37. Craig Stiles is credited with 16 points and Randy Frazier 11.

M-Club faculty basketball game this Saturday night

The Malta Faculty will meet the "M" Club Saturday night at 8:30 in a game that will decide the mythical basketball championship of Malta High School.

Leading the faculty team will be Tom Moran, Dean Robertson, Jim Nordlund, Glen Flatt, Dave Miller, Barry Morrison, Bob Gilman, George Day, Juergen Menssen, Dennis McOmber and Jerry Pokarney.

Preceding the Faculty-"M" Club game will be exhibition wrestling matches between grade school students starting at 7 p.m.

Adult admission will be 50¢ and students, 25¢. The proceeds will be used by the "M" Club for athletic equipment.

New Bee Champs Crowned

Pam Larcombe placed first in the Malta Public School seven and eighth grade spelling bee held Friday at the high school. Carla Sawyer was second, Liana Bowers, third, Virginia Koss, fourth, and Bill Cole, fifth. The five students will be entered in the Phillips County Spelling Bee March 16 at 2 p.m. at the high school auditorium.

Mrs. Eugene Mendel will be the pronounceer. Judges are Mrs. Allen Oxarart of Content, Mrs. Joe Nicholson of Dodson and Mrs. Eugene Cowan of Loring.

Malta's Durham is Spelling Bee Winner

Sarah Durham, a Malta 8th grader, and Lacy Lodmell, Malta, 7th grade, finished first and second respectively in the recent County spelling bee. Superintendent Gary Baden presented the two with their first and second place plaques.

Crowns come to town

The Harlem Crowns will be presenting their fabulous basketball circus on Saturday, March 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Malta High School Gym. $5 admission, under six for free. Halftime contest planned.

Which is the best show on TV and which is the worst?

Ted Kelly: "I really like Jeopardy and PBS is good. There are a lot I don't like, like The Simpsons."

Ann Sautter: "I like American Idol. I don't care for The Unit."

Megan Bleth: "I like Lost. I can't think of any really bad ones."

Fred Allery: "I like Dog the Bounty Hunter. I don't know which is the worst. There are plenty of them."

Malta Homecoming Royalty

Mitch Ereaux and Brittany Berg were selected to reign as king and queen over the Malta High School Prom Saturday night.
