HLRC to host BBQ, kick off '100 Club'

The Hi-Line Retirement Center (HLRC) will be having a free appreciation barbecue on Thursday, May 18 at 5:30 p.m. to celebrate its 38th year of providing care for the community. The barbecue, hosted by community members of a Thrivent Financial Action Team and the Hi_Line Staff and Board of Directors, will feature hot dogs, burgers and more. The festivities will happen at the Center’s parking lot.

‘Helping Hands and Caring Hearts’ is the motto for the Hi-Line Retirement Center staff and Board Members. “This motto can actually be claimed by Phillips County citizens for the past 37 ½ years since the nursing home opened its doors in 1979”, stated Paula Enkerud, Social Worker at the Center. “ Through the outpouring of donations, hours of volunteer services, acts of kindness and love shown in the past, Phillips County and others have definitely projected our motto - helping hands and caring hearts. “

Carol Kienenberger, one of the planners for the barbecue, stated the barbecue is a great opportunity to thank Phillips County and outlying area residents for the support they have given HLRC.

Recently the Hi-Line Retirement Center Board of Directors appointed volunteers to serve on a fundraising committee for the Center. The Committee’s first endeavor is starting a “100 Club”. A few years back, Greg Kirkwood, the charter president of the Wolf Point “100 Club”, suggested the idea to start one here. The Wolf Point $100 Club started back in 1979 and Glasgow started one shortly after. A person, business or family buys a yearly membership for $100 and that’s all you do. “One does not have to attend meetings, serve on committees, hold a bake sale or go over by-laws”, Kienenberger added, “Basically it’s costing an individual $8 a month to belong.”

This membership is a donation to the nursing home. And since HLRC is a tax-exempt non-profit 501 (c) 3 corporation, the contribution of $100 is tax deductible. The fundraising committee will start selling $100 Club memberships at the May 18th barbecue. “We want you to attend the barbecue whether you buy a membership or not”, stated Suzanne Koss, Treasurer for the fundraising committee. We are going to be there to provide all of us an opportunity to donate to a great cause. If one wants to make a donation but doesn’t want to purchase a membership, that’s fine too. All people who donate whether its $5 or $500 will have their name put in a drawing. From the 18th until June 3, the fundraising committee will be screening the county giving everyone an opportunity to donate. This will be an annual fundraiser event with money raised through this effort being split 50/50 to purchase needed equipment and establish an endowment fund.
