Malta travels to Shelby

Mustangs start season 2-0, M-ettes plagued by turnovers

The Malta Mustangs and Malta M-ettes saw their first action of the season last weekend at the Shelby Invitational.

Malta defeated Cut Bank 53-40 on Saturday, December 9, thanks to a quick start in which they outscored the Wolves 12-4 in the first quarter.

Landon VanWichen had a game high 13 points. Konner Kuehn and Kevin Henry both had 11 points, Kendall Koss had eight points, Tanner Smith had four points and Rhett Simanton had three points.

Malta also beat Florence 45-43.

The M-ettes season started with a loss to Belt, who has won five of the last six Class C titles. The score was 64-29.

Malta was led by Kyleigh Schipman, who had 10 points, three rebounds and two steals. Kloie Marks had six points, Kelbee Denham had five points, Raina Mortenson and Taylor Gilkerson each had three and Erica Smith had two points.

Malta had 35 turnovers in the loss while forcing 14, Belt scored 22 points off of turnovers.

Malta would lose to the Bigfork Valkyries 53-34 on Saturday, December 9.

Malta was led by Denham, who had 13 points. Schipman had six points, Smith had four points, Janessa Malmend had three points, Ella Schye, Carly Garfield and Mortenson had two points. Taylor Eggebrecht and Marks both had one point.

Malta cleaned more boards than Bigfork, recording 24 rebounds to Bigfork's 22 but again Malta was plagued with turnovers, turning the ball over 36 times. Bigfork scored 16 points off of turnovers.
