100 years ago

A Valentine poem written by Carl Veseth in a 5-minute English session has a prominent place in the school notes. The poem follows:

"Kaiser, we love you (more or less)

For getting us into this worldwide mess

But Kaiser you'll love us (less or more)

When we land our Sammies at your back door.

Kaiser, when you see those boys of mine

"Will you be our Valentine?"

At the annual meeting of the Milk River Gun Club, four members in service were honored. They were Dr. C. E. Blankenhorn, Dr. Hoyt of Glasgow, Allen Arnot and George Burke.

Dr. and Mrs. C. E. Blankenhorn were the parents of a son born at Butte. Note: The son is now Capt. Charles E. Blankenhorn of the U.S. Air Force who recently received the distinguished flying cross for outstanding performance in the middle east.

Orvie Lovejoy while driving the mail from Malta to Lovejoy, had a narrow escape when his team dropped through the ice on the Little Cottonwood Creek. Lovejoy managed to save the team at great risk to himself.

Malta ranked 15th in the state in the sale of Thrift Stamps. (Editor's Note: Thrift Stamp, which originated in Yellowstone County, were sold to raise money for the war effort.)

C. E. Hotz of Wadena, Minn., had arrived in Malta to take charge of the Baehr clothing store, the proprietor having been called to war.

February 18, 1943

16 men leave for Fort Douglas Wednesday

Sixteen men left Wednesday of this week for Fort Douglas, Utah, following a short furlough at their homes after physical examinations at Butte. The men make up the February selectee contingent from Phillips County.

The list includes Glen H. Lyden, who was appointed acting corporal; Russell Gonda, Claude S. Brokker, Winston F. Mitchell, Alvin J. Eklund, Adolph J. Eklund, Elwood Harnish, Charles Welsh, Donald A. Partridge, Lewis J. Johnson, John C. Cruikshank, Arthur S. Aune, Robert R. Welsh, Adam Flying, Leo G. Miller, Leslie V. Sheumaker, Harold Miller and Harvey Bruckner.

Dodson Card Sharks take Hot Shots into camp

Dodson snoos players slapped the Hot Sots down by a 370-363 score during the past week. Sundseth and Mayor R. G. Monroe of Strater upheld the "Monroe" system with a plus 49.

Dodson players were Munson, Nordlund, Partridge, Applehans, Swatek, LaFond, Claypool and Moen. Strater was represented by Monroe, Sundseth, H. Simanton, T. Simanton, Runnion, Primeau, Campbell, and Henderson.

County War Chest has received $5,000.01

The Phillips County War Chest is able to announce this week that by reason of generous contribution since the start of the new year it has received a total of $5,000.01 since the time of its organization.

The Phillips County War Chest accepts these contributions for war relief and wishes to thank the organizations and individuals who made them.

February 15, 1968

Varied agenda for council at Monday night meeting

The Malta City Council at its meeting Monday night decided to call for bids for a new swimming pool boiler to replace the current one which is worn out.

John Duty, Standard Oil agent in Malta, and two representatives of his company attended the meeting and discussed the mosquito spraying program with the council. They submitted a price on Malathion to replace the DDT, which has been used by the City in previous years.

The council received several letters from the State Board of Health concerning odors at the sewage lagoon.

Malta man gets $100 for big potato

A potato grower from Malta has won a $100 government bond for growing the largest potato in the country - in this case, a four and one-quarter pound red russet.

The award was presented to James Taylor by the Potato Club Institute of Cleveland, Ohio, as part of its annual big potato contest. Tyler's potato was said to be big enough to about 17 medium size potatoes.

Question: Are you willing to sacrifice to help President Clinton achieve his economic goals?

Jim Kelsey: Sure! We are going to have to. I don't mind a little raise to help the economy.

Karen Miller: No. I think they should cut government spending and not hit the middle class.

Patti Emond: Yes, whether or not we like him, we have to support him as long as it doesn't go against our beliefs and morals.

Robert Smith: I would if I believed that it would get rid of our debt.

Zortman School to close this spring

The Malta School Board voted last week to close the Zortman School at the end of the school year.

The Zortman School only has one student enrolled and no prospects for an increase in enrollment next year.
