Lady Mavs, Lady Coyotes, head to 3C Tourney

The 2018 District 3C Girls Basketball Tournament in Glasgow is set to begin as the Dodson Lady Coyotes and North Country find themselves on opposite sides of the bracket.

The Lady Mavericks, who took second in the conference, will have a first round bye alongside the Lustre Lady Lions who took third in the conference. The Lady Lions and Lady Mavs will see each other in the semi-finals on Friday, February 16, at 4:30 p.m.

The Dodson Lady Coyotes, who finished fifth in the conference, will have to face the fourth-seed Frazer Lady Bearcubs on Thursday, February 15, at 3:30 p.m. The winner will go on to the semi-finals to face the Scobey Lady Spartans, who went 10-0 against 3C foes this year.

Only the top three teams in 3C will advance to the Eastern C Divisional Tournament scheduled to start on Wednesday, February 21.

Lady Mavericks

Last week, the Lady Mavs lost to Lustre 44-31 on Friday, February 9, and then went on to defeat Frazer 78-44 on Saturday, February 10.

In the team's win over Frazer, Lady Maverick senior Jada Sudbrack had a game-leading 26 points, Kaitlyn McColly had 14 points. The Lady Mavericks had three players score nine points, which included Mickayla Johnson, Casity Boucher and Kia Wasson.

“I was a little bit worried about that last one being in Frazer, but we came out much more intense than we did against Lustre,” Lady Mavericks Coach Amber Erickson said. “Kaitlyn McColly started on Mya Fourstar and did a great job defensively on her. Our intensity and effort level was so much better. We hit shots, ran the floor hard, defended well and rebounded.”

After grabbing a 37-27 lead at halftime, the Lady Mavericks defense only allowed six points in the third, while scoring 22 of their own points, the Lady Mavericks also outscored Frazer 19-11 in the fourth quarter.

In North Country's loss to Lustre, the Mavs were led by McColly, who scored 14 points. Sudbrack had eight points, Johnson had six points, Boucher had three points and Zeller had one point.

“We came out flat, could not buy a bucket, did not make smart decisions and everything went their way,” Coach Erickson said. “They shot 33 free throws to our four, we settled for a lot of outside shots and jumper vs their 2-3 zone. It was a good wake-up all for us.”

Lady Coyotes

The Lady Coyotes fell to Lustre on Saturday, February 10. The score was 60-40.

Melony Fetter led Dodson with 15 points. Christina Jaynes had a 12 point, 14 rebound double-double and Donna Dale had five points.

“We just weren't consistent,” Dodson Head Coach Deserae KillEagle said. “We just couldn't get going. We were very sluggish and okay with being sluggish. We couldn't get out of that funk.”

Lustre's Sadie Brown had 26 points and Gabriella Capasso had 24.

“We knew who we needed to watch but they are just solid players,” Coach KillEagle said.

The Lady Coyotes kept pace with Lustre in the first quarter, scoring 14, while Lustre scored 15. Lustre would widen the gap outscoring Dodson 17-8 in the second quarter and then 28-18 in the second half.

“We stayed with them the first quarter,” Coach KillEagle said. “And for the second quarter and the other quarters we stopped stopping the ball from advancing. We weren't rebounding.”

Coach KillEagle believes that weather-related distractions impacted the team that day.

“We had some bus issues and it was a long day,” Coach KillEagle said. “We ended up cancelling the JV games, and as soon as we got there the girls got dressed without their warmups.”

Dodson defeated the Frazer Lady Bearcubs 75-68 on Monday, February 12, in Dodson.
