Celebrate Ag Day on March 23

Though it doesn't look much like spring outside, the fact that Ag Day in Phillips County is right around the corner signals the changing of the seasons, and though few of them will be able to attend the day, the event honors farmers and ranchers in the area and has been doing so for 39 years.

"Unfortunately, though most of them can't come to town, Ag Day is for all of our agricultural producers and a celebration of what they do for consumers," said Marko Manoukian, Phillips County Extension agent.

On Friday, March 23, the 39th Annual Ag Day in Phillips County will be held at the Malta City Hall Gymnasium, starting at 11 a.m. and continuing through the day until around 3:30 p.m.

The event started in 1979 and is hosted by the Phillips County Extension Office and the Phillips County CattleWomen. The day includes displays by local groups and companies - Art's Furniture, Todd's Technology, CHS Big Sky and Missouri River Realty are a few of the 20-something who have reserved tables - and across the street, the Malta and Phillips County Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting their annual, free will offering burgers and beans (and fish sandwich )feed at the fire hall.

"People should come and take the opportunity to meet with the businesses that we have at the event," Manoukian said. "And the Extension Office and CattleWomen would like to extend our appreciation to the businesses' participation in the celebration."

The day will also include awards for the students who won in this year's "Ag in Montana Schools" bumper sticker contest in which Phillips County students from grades 1-through-5 are tasked with designing agriculture-themed drawings. The award presentation for the sticker contest will be at 3 p.m.

The CattleWomen will also be hosting the annual Pie and Cupcake Contest (see their advertisement on this page) in which both children and adults are asked to participate. (The day will also feature a pie auction.)
