Invited to the fish fry

Malta Walleyes Unlimited to host 29th Annual Banquet this Saturday at the Malta City Hall

The fish will be fried to a golden brown, the raffle items stacked from wall to wall, and conversations bouncing from floor to ceiling in the Malta City Hall Auditorium as the grand-daddy of Phillips County banquets, the 28th annual Malta Chapter Walleyes Unlimited Banquet, gets under-way this Saturday night, March 31.

“The support we get at this banquet and throughout the year is always incredible,” Malta Chapter Walleyes Unlimited President Jim Mayer said. “We hope to see another large crowd at the banquet this year and everyone coming should expect to have a good time while supporting a worthy cause.”

Monies raised each year at the banquet go toward local projects —in the past projects have included repairs to the pedestrian bridge in Malta and dock repair at Nelson Reservoir— as well as funding the "Take a Kid Fishing Day" in the Winter, Camp Walleye in the summer and Young Angler Awards for children and scholarships for college students from Phillips County (the latter two will take place Saturday at the banquet.)

The no-host happy hour starts at 6 p.m. and the fish starts flying (dinner is served) at 7 p.m. Dinner and membership tickets will be available at the door at Malta City Hall. Dinner only tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for children and kids under 12 enter for free. Dinner and Membership for a single person are $50 and dinner and membership for a couple is $65. The menu will be the same as years past because if it ain’t broke, no need to fix it. The night’s food will feature Cora's World Famous Potatoes, baked beans, coleslaw and, of course, fish. There will also be beverages available for purchase. Aside from the food, the Malta Chapter Walleyes Unlimited Banquet also packs the gym with people because of the raffles and children’s games and, again, that portion of the night is not broken. Mayer said that this year’s gun raffles will feature a Ruger LCP 380, a Savage A22 semi-automatic, and an Omni AR-style firearm.

“I hope people say thank you to and support all the business, organizations and individuals who give so much to make each banquet successful,” Mayer said. “There is a lot of support in our community and this is the biggest banquet of the year so bring your out of town guests here for the Easter weekend because it is a great way to spend a Saturday night.”

One particular area of support Mayer said he would like to see at this year’s event is the more hands on deck type.

“We are always accepting more help,” Mayer said. “We need help setting up and, sometimes, many of the younger people just jet off. Many hands make light work and everyone has a better time with the more help we have.”
