May 30, 1918

Mayor E. Sklower had issued a proclamation declaring Memorial Day as a legal holiday. Observances included a reading of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address by H. M. Kirton and addresses by the Reverend G. V. Bell, Rev. W. H. Haley, and Rev. G. L. Stone.

Ed Lenno was arrested for cattle rustling and Carl Schultz was picked up for having in his possession five head of horses not bearing his brand.

The Malta band was reorganized with B. W. Withrow, director; Miss Edna Partridge, librarian, and the following board of directors, A. J. Bishell, George Chambers, and O. P. Shenefelt.

Mrs. Gertrude Rathbone had departed for Dillon to take a special course at the State Normal College Summer School.

The icemen of Malta are contemplating raising the price of their product, we're consulting the county food administrator before putting new prices into effect.

H. L. Sort, chairman of the county Red Cross, reported a total of $2,287.85 in donations which was more than twice the quota set for the county.

May 27, 1943

Veterans of three major wars buried in cemetery 65 soldiers,

Veterans of three major wars, Indian campaigns and peacetime service, are buried in the Malta cemetery and will be honored by a firing squad from the American Legion at ceremonies at the cemetery Sunday afternoon, May 30.

Three men from Phillips County have lost their lives in World War II. They are Norman Deo, Lieut. Commander Lee S. Pancake and Edward Kuntz. Commander Pancake was buried at sea and Deo and Kuntz are buried somewhere on the Philippine Islands.

The list was prepared by Frank Hromas, who is charman of the graves location committee of the American Legion. In addition to American Soldiers buried in Mala, there is one veteran of the Candadian Army buried in the Legion plot.

Seventeen veterans of the Civil War include the following: Frank Oliver, Andrew Swanson, Daniel Tressler, William McLean, Lloyd C. Lathrop, John Emerick, Eli Southwick, Merritt Wolcott, John R. Sammons, Charles E. Russell. Robert H. Moore, Ahimaz B. Wood, George E. Chambers, Charles D. Wilson, Philander A. Dodge, S. C. Lloyd and Nathaniel Flagg.

Two veterans of the Spanish­-American war are buried in the Malta cemetery. They are Lorenzo Coffman and Mason Jacobs.

Forty-two veterans of World War I will be honored by their comrades: Raymond Reed, Michial Murphy, Crell C. Hyatt, William Matson, John Fields, Bernard Campson, Fred Wilhelm, Ward Hovey, Guy Miller, Clayton Richards, Charlie Schmitz, Eugene Flynn, Harold A. Clark, Julian McGillis, Chester Vorheis, William Brown: Wyman G. Hough, Gilbert Alsaker, John Wagner, Lewis Instebo, Norman Taylor, Feodore J. Haenel, Chapman Taylor, Arthur J. Kittleson, Andrew Hanson, James A. McNeil, John Barileach, James Alfred Aikins, Frederick G. Wackerle, Neal H. Smith, Earl Smart, Harry Carroll. Gustave A. Kindberg, George Claypool, Clyde J. Cunningham, Clyde Quigley, John Warzeha, John Mickus, James Gordon Brown, John E. Dear, Robert Friedly and Joseph Parradie.

Other veterans of United States Army service include Louden Minugh, veteran of Indian wars: John Overgaard , peacetime veteran, and George Yeater, peacetime veteran.

The Canadian soldier buried in the local cemetery is Tex Cameron.

May 23, 1968

Craig Stiles won State B javelin throw

Craig Stiles, Malta High School freshman and star javelin event at the State Track Meet held in Billings last Friday and Saturday. His throw of 94'9" not only won for him the first place medal but established a new Malta High School record.

Although not very big in stature, being 5'9" tall and weighing about 155 pounds, Stiles shows great promise for high school athletes.

The six points earned by Stiles were the only points brought home by the Malta tracksters.

Saco bowlers dominated play in league season

League bowling for the season had ended at Mustang Lanes and teams and individuals from Saco have sort of overwhelmed the large delegation of Malta bowlers to take home most of the honors for the winter season.

In the Monday night men's league, Donoho's team from Saco ended up in first place with G.N. Lounge, second; Anthony's, third, and Beyer's Husky, fourth.

The gals from Nelson's team from Saco won the Powder Puff league which bowls on Tuesday nights. Gambles team was second and the First State, third. In the women's, Jacobs Plumbing was first, G. N. Lounge, second Buttreys, third and Palms of Saco, fourth.

Flatt named Wrestling Coach of the Year

Glenn Flatt was named Class B Wrestling Coach of the Year by the Montana Coaches Association at an awards banquet held in Billings last Friday.

Flatt organized the wrestling program in Malta High School in 1959 and has continued as head coach since that time.

Question: What do you think should happen to adults who buy liquor for minors?

Sarah Dunbar: I think they should be punished severely either with jail time ora major fine.

Kale Wilke: They should be fined!

Marrimae Solberg: They should not buy liquor for minors and the way to punish them is to not allow to them to buy liquor for themselves for a year.

Wally Henry: Hang 'em!
